Even Colder With Snow ? On The Way

15 this morning...that's the coldest we've hit in a couple of years...now, seems there is snow coming, actual snow, also, something we haven't seen in a couple of years. A potential major storm that will likely throw a major wrench into my ski clinic/dog boarding plans..time and snow will tell.

For now the sun is shining brightly, the birds are chowing mightily and it's still cold -well, 35, still chilly but warming a bit. Clouds ahead of the approaching storm will modify both the rising high temp and tonight's low. Snow is forecast to begin before dawn Sunday and continue off and on for days..depending on how the Low turns into a nor'easter and wraps its wrath around onto us. We'll know by Tuesday what happened!

Quakes today, and a few hit low 5's, are pretty much just around the Pacific Ring O Fire & Shakes. Indonesia, as usual, leads in the count; Scotia, Kamchatka, Meso and South America in on the 5+ action. Little shakes continue around Puerto Rico and magma movement is still causing Hawai'i to shimmy.

Could be a little solar wind uptick to start February kicking up aurora action, still only at high latitudes. Winter star gazing will be clouded out for what seems likely to be several days here.

3,600 TrumpVirus deaths yesterday; with 26 million infections and we'll hit 440,000 total dead by day's end, likely not quite making 450,000 dead by January's end...didn't hit your goal, donny; not a new thing for you, not making a goal... New strains, our experiment in viral evolution proceeding quite well, keep popping worldwide (mostly in countries with poor leadership that have ignored the reality, like the US)and continued travel and simple hygiene ignorance is likely to keep the spreading trials running for months. Va.'s inoculation rate lags on.. sad, when the governor's a doctor.

We did stir up 3 deer yesterday, kinda nice (if they stay out of the garden in the summer) to see and know the local militia/hunter types didn't kill them all last season... Not for lack of trying..a neighbor explaining..we don't work during hunting season..then went on to brag about all the sizes and sexes of deer killed. Same as it ever was..Today On Earth.

A Frigid Friday

Twice now, in one week, the temp has dipped to 19 degrees, and even with lots of sunshine the very dry air is slow to warm. There's not much breeze but any moving air adds to the heat removal and the chill. Inside the sunny tirehouse..it's toasty!!

After another near miss with snow yesterday, just the cutest little dusting, recent trends would say the next forecast system will likely miss, too. That may not be the case. We may actually get 2-3 days of snow with significant totals...good timing for a ski clinic...bad timing for dropping a dog off and getting to a ski clinic. As always, time and Earth will have the final say.

Quake numbers were up a bit today, 10, but all small in both Alaska and on & off Puerto Rico. Japanese archipelago a bit shaky and a series in the mid-mag. 5 range off Panama. Some minor action in Northern California; Scotia Plate still adrift!!

The Wolf Moon was quite bright last night, a few howls that way felt nice!! Didn't have binocs and could not spot Mercury, not sure if it's quickly too low or there was still a little too much twilight..or a combo of both. Mars still beams, semi-bright but outshone by many of the bright stars of winter trailing it to the east. Should be more good viewing tonight, albeit cold..teens again likely before clouds ahead of the storm damp the temperature drop.

Another 3,800+ Americans died yesterday...as republicans in congress meet with the former douche bag traitor prez and actively campaign against others of their party that called the traitor out...self before country the new republican mantra, stay in office at all costs, go for the coup, round two, if needed. Need to Make 'merica White Again and humor the idiot fascists with all their guns. Sad & pathetic..not surprising! As hundreds die back home, they rally around the liar responsible for all the deaths..still trouble in the US of A.

A Snow Dusting, Wild Wind.. Wilder Volcanoes

Almost 2 dozen volcanoes on this week's list; most going wild..some, I just noticed, have been at it for almost a century. Guatemala's Santa Maria has been in eruption mode since 1922.. Indonesia's Dukono since 1933, Italy's Stromboli since 1934; all three still getting wild in 2021! 5 others in Indonesia, adding Raung & Merapi this week, with local stay away warnings, Kamchatka the usual 5 on the list. Fuego & Pacaya join Santa Maria as the usual Guatemalan volcano trio. Sangay and Reventador are still having dozens of blasts daily in Ecuador, the usual 3 in Japan, Manam on PNG and Soufriere St. Vincent is still building a lava dome, lots of daily quakes in the West Indies. Earth, as usual, is all fired up!!

At least, no big quakes; 5.0 east of PNG, the largest on a short list today.

Here the story is the wind; the powdered sugar dusting of snow last night is mostly gone, the sun is beaming bright but the wind is howling. We are pinched between the powerful Low that brought the snow(we were just on the northern edge of the storm)and a massive High over the plains, the resultant pressure differences: wild wind, howling as I type. Glad my house in mostly in ground, mostly oblivious to a NW wind; the sun doing its solar warming job on the tirehouse, thanks Sol!

Another 4,101 Americans died yesterday from the TrumpVirus; Cali still leading the way with over 700. Even as infection numbers are trending down, deaths remain high, nationwide. Tonight is the Full Wolf Moon, with clear skies, no leaves, it will be bright. Mars the only planet you can really see; I couldn't spot Mercury last night. Not sure if it was distant clouds, twilight or that the small, speedy world has passed it's peak relative to Earth and is now racing to pass between us and the sun, dropping lower each night. Snow & Ice & Rain & Tornadoes - Earth!!

The big blue marble is riled up these day (not really, Earth don't care). Blizzard conditions in the Great Lakes, move south into ice in the form of freezing rain, here it was just rain and in the Deep South, tornadoes. Cali with blizzard and rain and soon...mudslides. Oh yea, TrumpVirus deaths and transmissions still rage across this country and worldwide. And, since we've refused (well, millions of TDS* dumbasses have refused) to follow simple precautions we've given the virus the huge laboratory it needs to really mutate. Now evolving ever more rapidly into new strains, new variants. 421,000 dead Americans, over 25 million cases, TDS* you really made America great again! World Virus Champ - the TrumpVirus!!!

Half dozen magnitude 5+ quakes today, all along the Aussie Pacific boundary zone. Average looking quake day, otherwise, also along boundary zone, in particular the Ring O Fire, Pacific plate subduction always ongoing.

A solar belch has increased the solar wind engulfing the Earth, firing up auroras in the northern polar regions, pretty stuff. The moon approaches Full, brightening the clouds last night even as the rain fell. Thursday is the day for the Wolf Moon, straight behind the Earth at 2:16pm EST. Throw in a storm, now seriously downgraded here, and spring tide coastal flooding will add to the raucous scene.

The TV weather folk have been going gaga over the snow potential her for Thursday but the system has sped up and looks to stay south, perhaps a dusting here. Change on a warming world, deal with it:)

My morning wake up came from a young, female cardinal banging into a tire house window (seems to be more bird collisions on cloudy days). Breyer, was drooling at the door, a feathered breakfast in sight but I managed to hold him back, collect the stunned bird, center her on the outdoor bar, out of the big dog's reach and give her time. Breyer was seriously bummed. By the time I got back up and he returned from his morning visit with his girlfriend, the stunned bird was gone; good luck to her!!

One tube feeder is empty, the other close; 4 hours to empty two feeders, bird mania! 2 or 3 dozen out there feeding at any one time. Eat away, you little feathered piggies.

February (it's coming) On & Off Earth

February 2021 - On & Off Earth

While there are drawbacks to wintertime walks on the big planet, there are also some big advantages. There are no issues with humidity and sweating, there are no flies, ticks or mosquitoes looking to snack on you, no spider webs to wrap around your face and no danger of surprise or attack from snakes.

Just follow the basic winter outdoor rules: dress in layers, adding a hat and gloves, wind and rain protection, as needed.  I like a vest and hood in the mix. The more you get out in the winter, the better you’ll get at layering up. February helping you get out, tilting us back sunward; every day, the sun rising a minute earlier, setting a minute later.

I will leave it for you to decide if coming back into a toasty warm house after a chilly walk is better than returning to a cool house after time spent out in the summer heat.

It has been years, perhaps over a decade, since I have heard the “Bob White” call of my area’s namesake bird, the Quail. Perhaps replacing the quail, certainly in the surprise factor, I’ve just added a new bird to my life list, the woodcock.

Like the quail, the woodcock waits until I’m close before exploding into flight, twittering as it flees, just like the bird book says. Woodcocks look like flying, feathered softballs with ridiculously long beaks. Recently, after one such startling encounter, a hawk, I’m sure with sinister intentions, launched, following the woodcock couple deeper into the woods; the daily dance of life and survival on stark display. 

It has also been awhile, almost 2 years, since we had a day where temperatures remained below freezing for the entire day. This past Sunday was the first time in almost two years temperatures even dipped into the teens at my house. During that same time span, any real snow has been absent, too. A walk in falling snow is far superior to a walk in a cold, winter rain.

That is far different than when I first moved back to Virginia, to Louisa, in the early 1990’s and ice skated for days on the pond, well frozen, in the back yard of the house I had the pleasure of renting. No ice skating around here in these warmer days, even the Great Lakes remain mostly ice free again this winter.

The Full Snow Moon occurs on February 27th. A week before, the near first quarter moon does its monthly slide past Mars. Dimmer than last Fall, but still rust red, high up in the southern, early evening sky, Mars remains the only planet easily visible in February. The sun is well into Capricorn to begin February, sliding into Aquarius on the 17th.

One year ago, I was just returning home after an amazing week of skiing in the French Alps. There were many more faces covered with masks on our return trip than we’d seen on the way to Europe. There was a bit of banter in our group about the reports of a deadly virus in China but we took no precautions. However, the day after our return, all three airports we passed through began restrictions, the pandemic was underway. So sad, that our response, so poor in so many ways has our country still breaking infection and death records.

I am on the vaccine list, waiting to raise a sleeve, but mask always at the ready and hopeful that I will be able travel this year, safely, far beyond the woods I wander daily. Let’s get it done, America.

Cold...Shaky...Deaths Roll On

The temperature dipped into the teens, 19, earlier today; first time I've seen it that cold in 2 years here. High pressure is in control today but rain and snow are nearby, clouds later today, rain forecast tomorrow. Snow potential still seems possible for Thursday...we will see. Today and the week ahead do look to be cold, at or below average.

The southern half of the big planet is very shaky today, with the largest at 6.9, and big aftershocks, beneath the Scotia's plate junction with the Antarctic peninsula; no tsunami warning issued. Half a dozen 5+ quakes from Indonesia around to south of New Zealand; Chile gets in on the big shake action, too. Earth continues shifting and shaking.

3M's rule the night sky, Moon, Mars & Mercury all continue to dazzle after sunset. Bundle, take a football break and check it out, although clouds are likely to block that here tonight...and tomorrow, too, with rain thrown in.

Another 3,340 Americans died yesterday from the TrumpVirus, California & Texas still leading the death parade, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey all recently joining the 20K dead club.

The blatant incompetence of the previous joke of an administration gradually being reversed by the new Biden team but the deeper they dig, the bigger the mess revealed. Personal opinions you may have but facts are either true or false. An example: in your opinion, Kelly Ann Conway is either smoking hot or a scary skank but the fact is, she is a liar. Alternative truth is a lie!!

Bird Feeder Mania!

The bird seed frenzy continues, two tubes of sunflower seed gone by midday. Much is raked onto the ground for easier consumption for all..including a large brown dog that like the seed, as well. But, they a fun to watch so I'll keep the seed and suet a coming. Here's a shot of a dead tree in my front yard that I left for the woodpeckers. It been dead a couple of years and the peckers are enjoying it.

Looking like 5 quakes hit mag. 5 today; China and PNG around to north of New Zealand along the Aussie Pacific boundary. Puerto Rico numbers are down!?!

Cool and breezy here today but lots of sun so toasty at the tirehouse. High pressure builds in after dry front went through yesterday ahead of system Monday into Tuesday and another Thursday. Thursday's is being billed as potential for snow but storm itself is still over the Pacific..so..we got a ways to go on that forecast. Clouds will begin to arrive tomorrow ahead of Monday's rain; for now, sun works (literally) for me.

Moon was nice and bright last night, waxing on. Didn't go out after real dark to check Uranus. Did spot Mercury in the sunset haze but sun is setting a minute a day later so walks need to get later to let light fade. I think it is highest in sky tomorrow before dropping back down as it races toward us, sliding between Earth and sun the end of the first week in Feb. Mars still shimmers high in the south at sunset!

Get out, check it out, but safely..another 3,734 Americans died yesterday from the TrumpVirus, over 214,000 our new, sad, death count. Such an easy fix, wear a mask..so many TrumpDickSucking morons.

Pretty Sure I Saw Uranus..!

I've been checking for the last 3 nights, clear and cool, and even with a brightening moon nearby there is a "star" below Mars that is reported to be Uranus. Hard to see it as a ball with just my binocs but it look less like a star and more planet like. The other, often illusive, planet is Mercury and it is an easy spot about 5:45 these days, beaming in the SW above the fading glow of sunset. The moon is finally bright enough that its shadows in the darkening woods are a little disconcerting; hey, what was that...oh, moon shadow. The seeing and walking with the moon light extends outdoor times for the next few days, get out!!

Will need to bundle a little more; today will be warmish here, 50's again but the next front will bring back some colder air for the weekend and week ahead. Looks like some rain Monday/Tuesday and perhaps a little snow storm Thursday. Still a lot of time..and nothing but change..and wishing really won't help. But, that aside, I may go out and cry Ullr into the woods, see if I can stir the Norse god of snow!!

No big quakes today; two magnitude 5.0 along northern Mid-Atlantic ridge, maybe a little magma oozing, maybe a little transform fault shifting as magma pushes up the sea floor. Puerto Rico region still with a dozen shakes; still wondering what exactly is going on there. I know it's a subduction zone, deep trench nearby..still..

Sun is not completely quiet, new cycle is coming to life with a big blast off the NE edge from Earth's view. Couple of little sunspots but nothing blasting away.

The moon waxes on, sliding on past Mars, should be near the Pleiades(aka: Subaru) tonight with Taurus's Aldebaran below. You'll never know if you don't go out and look!!

The new president discovered yesterday that the reason we have seen no plan to battle the TrumpVirus, no plan or organization to get vaccines out, anything..is there is no plan, nothing!! 408,000+ dead and no plan, zip. The only plan donny the traitor ever had was to stay in the spotlight, steal all he could and cut taxes for the richest corps and people, no plan.

The reality of no plan really bummed the qanon assbrains; seems they really thought there was a secret plan to take out the incoming administration and install donny as king. They are so disappointed, some actually admitting on social media they were duped!  Lot of stupidity out there... Hopefully, gradually, more brainwashed fools will realize donny did not care about them at all, only that they praise and worship him. His only consistency in ALWAYS being a narcissist, racist, misogynist traitor. Not sure why his little bitch Mitch gets any say in when the senate trial begins, he's on the losing side now. Should be a one day, one hour senate trial and he should be convicted and jailed, awaiting execution. Literally, "donny, you're fired".

My yard birds have almost cleaned out two tube feeders this morning, standard for the little feathered pigs. My dog is still out visiting his girl. Clouds are cutting into the solar heating here at the tire house but it has made it to 51 outside. Time for a walk and Friday!!

Quakes, Eruptions & Uranus... A New President

Big rock moves 60 miles down near the southern tip of the diamond shaped Philippine plate produced a magnitude 7.0 quake earlier today. It was far offshore so likely no real damage and no tsunami warning..no harm, no foul?? Just a reminder, pressures build, rocks break and move, everyday!! Several mag. 5+ subduction quakes just offshore Chile/Peru boundary.

Lots of magma looking to get to the surface of our fractured planet; 22 volcanoes on the week's list (and none in Guatemala and no Popo so I know that list is incomplete). Etna is back on the list, oozing and blasting on Sicily, Kilauea's basaltic lava pools and looks for ways to escape and flow and Indonesia is still the place to be, or not, if volcanic activity you want to see; usual 5 blasting away, steer clear! Kamchatka also, stirred of late, ties Indonesia with 5 blasting mountains.

Two in the Aleutians are on the list but only to report there is no report, technical difficulties. New Zealand's Ruapehu has settled and calmed. Sabancaya in Peru is still blasting away, couple of dozen eruption blasts per day, every day!! Shallow quakes beneath Pelee on Martinique have that island on edge, last blast, boom, no warning!! Soufriere St. Vincent's lava dome continues to grow and ooze; trouble in paradise!!

After a cloudy and cold start, the sun has finally broken through and temps are forecast to climb into the 50's here in central Va. today. The clouds were the edge of a storm sliding, again, through the Carolinas. Monster low over eastern Canada has that region stormy, minor air movements flung our way. Another dry front will slide through tomorrow bringing colder weekend temps. Storms Monday (rain) and next Thursday (snow?) have TV forecasters raising hopes for some snow, something we haven't seen in a couple of years.

The first quarter moon was lovely just below Mars last night. Been looking, think I've seen Uranus (rhymes with platypus not heinous)the last three nights, below Mars to SSE but nearby moon isn't helping. It is dim but seems to be where it is supposed to be from Sky & Tele description. Can't see it without binocs. The moon will have moved, the daily 12 degrees, to the east of Mars tonight. Mercury continues to grow a little higher in SW each night peaking on Saturday for this revolution. It's pretty easy to spot as the sunset colors fade.

And, in really good news, for the entire planet, the USA has a new president and vice-president (gotta give Mikey Pence some props for defying his heinous, former boss and attending, maybe his nuts are descending, his spine beginning to come in). Joe Biden & Kamala Harris - WOOOOOOOOOOO! Hope returns. A heart warming celebration last night, reminiscent of the virtual convention this past summer.

Still, the TrumpVirus rages, US deaths back over 4,000 yesterday; 406,000 total. So, you know the rules: stay safe, be smart, mask on, stay apart! Today On Earth!!

Wild Wind & Hope

A dry cold front is passing through and the pressure differences have the wind a'whipping. Already blown down one of my bird feeders, blown over chairs and leaves and debris are flying.

Speaking of debris flying, the obese debris pile that has been president is winging his way to Florida, a state deserving of him, after giving himself a sendoff, guessing not many showed early this morning to watch his fat ass waddle out of here. Leaving in his wake, over 204,000 people dead and a country and world deeply divided, nice job donny.

In less than 2 hours we'll have a new president, an actual leader, that cares about anyone other than himself and hope.

My hope, that I am not added to any TrumpVirus lists..but, I feel like crap today. Headache that won't go away and feverish, but not showing a fever, hope...that it is not!! My big sweet dog just returned!!

Puerto Rico and Hawai'i lead quake list today, but nothing big either place and only  a 5.1 quake in Vanuatu region above 5 for the planet.

I think it's Uranus I'm seeing lower left of Mars, two night in a row. Still need binocs to spot it. Sun is fairly quiet, thick crescent moon was lovely and I'm about done with, Today On Earth.

Sun Here, Argentina Quake

A magnitude 6.4 quake rattled things in the wilds of Argentina earlier today, aftershocks continue. Not much in the way of population nearby, it seems, so I doubt there was much carnage. Off Puerto Rico to NE is shaky today, plate boundary subduction my guess.

Sunny so far here today, WVa with snow showers so maybe some clouds here later. Looking like a dry, cool week, minor temp swings as little systems pass through but no rain or snow for Va. Long term (next week) forecast has snow in it..but that's next week. Cool, not really cold up north, warmer south, zonal flow. High pressure out west has Santa Ana winds firing up, upping fire danger! It's a warming world.

Did spot the moon through breaks in the clouds, later Mars as it cleared and maybe Uranus. I'll check again tonight.

More Clouds & Gloom

Another in a long line of chilly, gloomy Va. winter days..barely below freezing to start, into the 40's, more clouds than sun, no real shot at rain or snow. With the trees dormant, ground water levels (the water table) is still high, muddy trails anywhere low lying after a near record year of rainfall.

Earthquakes numbers are back down to lowish levels, only 2 above mag. 5 worldwide. There are still lots of folks recovering from recent big shakes, never fun; during a pandemic in winter, much less so.

The usual Sunday reporting dip in TrumpVirus deaths, only 1,700+ reported for yesterday, likely lower than actual. The far less than great, USA, still leads the world in cases and deaths; 24 million infected.

As California leads the way in cases and deaths, ICU's full, so are the beaches. Thousands out enjoying the warm weekend, sunbathing, strolling the boardwalks, most without a mask, dumbasses!! We have not only a health problem in this country but a serious stupidity problem. Throw in current youth, never having been told no, never losing (everyone gets a trophy), still believing they can be anything they want, living on their phones, oblivious to much around them (get out of my way...), still stuck in the immortality of youth with racist, undereducated white TrumpDickSuckers and here we are, death, turmoil and insurrection. Nice job donny!! Just as I predicted: way more damage in 4 years than W did in 8.

At least no solar storms coming although a little above normal solar wind will spark arctic auroras. Maybe I'll see the moon tonight, maybe Mars, maybe Mercury. Clearing prospects are not looking good right now. Also, no meteoroids making a near Earth flyby...so we got that going for us:)

In a standard corporate America tale, it has now been 3 weeks since I placed an order online (can't get anyone on the phone) to have Amerigas fill my propane tank, NOTHING. No reply from their chat room, no reply to emails, no one answers the phone, the recorded message still telling me I will have that delivery by the 11th. I'm about to see what response I get if I disconnect the tank and roll it out for them to come get. Bet their stock price is at an all time high, though.. Also, willing to bet most of their employees are TrumpDickSuckers that are now infected, or arrested after taking time off to try and overthrow our government.. long as stock prices stay high, no problem.

Graupel Squall!!

I saw the dark cloud coming, picked up my pace, first the sound, then the pelting. It was a graupel squall! Tiny snow/ice pellets, snowflakes coated with a second layer of ice on their decent, crashing down, quickly adding a white tint to the paths but it was all over quickly..and moved on. That arm of the storm that swung through at dusk yesterday seemed to be it, the sky cleared and stars appeared. Seems to be lake effect snow to the north and west but mostly sun here.

The week ahead has much of the country pretty standard mid-January temps; here that is lows in the upper 20's, highs in the upper 40's. Not much rain/snow chance till late in the week.

Another shaky day around the broken planet's boundary zones but nothing hitting mag. 6..or really close. California & Nevada & Puerto Rico lead the USA, reminders more than damaging shakes. Volcanoes in Indonesia seem to still be blasting away.

The sun remains relatively quiet, Mars and Mercury the only planets on display..well, Uranus is near Mars but I haven't spotted it yet. Venus in the morning is rising just before the sun and getting tougher to find, for my view anyway. You can see the best planet everyday: Earth. If I had to describe a typical VA winter day, today would come to mind: hazy sun, chilly but not cold, not cold enough for any snow even with wraparound from the monster storm that slid by to the north yesterday, blizzard conditions in tow; blah, nap worthy.

The new solar cycle is growing, a new sunspot has appeared, signs of more on the sun's opposite side. Solar winds heading Earth's way will likely fire up auroras way up north. Mercury continues to rise higher in SW after sunset, peaking on the 23rd. Yesterday's clouds blocked any viewing of sky sights. Moon waxes on, its crescent thickening. Clear skies, check it out!!

Uranus is near Mars, the brightest "star" nearby in binocs or certainly in a telescope; the bluegreen orb is closest on the 18th-22nd..

Explosive Eruption Potential...Everywhere

Got seeing an erupting volcano on your bucket list (it's on mine but, kinda, sorta, maybe..like seeing a tornado)? They are closer than you think; not that we can actually travel anywhere. In the West Indies, Soufriere(means sulfur mine) St. Vincent and Pelee on Martinique are both showing signs of life, the former with gas emissions, the latter with quakes indicating hydrothermal movement within. Popo in Mexico and Pacaya (and I'm sure, Fuego and Santa Maria) in Guatemala are still getting eruptive busy. Hawai'i's Kilauea still has lots of lava swirling and looking to flow. Russia's Kamchatka peninsula and Indonesia's archipelago both have 5 blasting away on the weeks list of 19; pretty normal for both island arcs (Kamchatka is island arc in formation, just still attached to mainland).

A magnitude 6.7 quake rocked the Mongolia Russia border region today, swaying yurts far and wide. Unless it was  a chinese nuclear test or genocide of non-chinese ethnics. Puerto Rico still quite shaky, usual boundary shakes worldwide.

Yesterday's southern storm is off the east coast, it did spit rain here. Never really rained, just made for a very nasty day. The sun is back, sky mostly cloud free, might even make the 50's here today; no real rain or winter cold in the extended forecast. The NW has the next system coming ashore, not sure of it's track..as if any weather person really is...

The moon is New tomorrow, most planets, Mars the exception, tucked behind or very near the sun, unsafe or unavailable for viewing. The winter night sky does dazzle. I did catch Scorpio low in the SSE about 6-ish the morning - always opposite Orion in the sky, but no Venus..

Clouds from the snow/rain storm rolling through the deep south have moved into Va.; no hint of sun(or snow) here and still stuck in the 30's. We appear to be too far north for any of the winter time festivities; my guess: whatever schools are open (likely too many) in dixie today, are having a snow day, don't take much!

Sun is forecast to return later this week, coolish days, chilly nights, pretty average January, especially in a warming world, still no temp here yet this winter in the teens.

I was a few minutes too early to spot Jupiter last night, a tougher task every night as we slowly tilt back sunward adding a minute to sunset every day this week; a long ways to summer lighting but getting better...and, we pull away from the Gas Giants.

Planet Trio - Whoa!!

I could only spot Jupiter from my forest, across the clear cut, so, I had to drive. Down the road to a bigger clear cut and it took some shifting and moving but..whoa!! Jupiter on high, bright; dimmer Saturn lower right, losing the race around the sun and hidden at first in the tree line; Mercury, far brighter than Saturn and looking to catch Earth, swinging out wide(ish) around the sun, poised to pass Jupiter over the next few days.

All 3 fitting in the much needed binocs (never did see Saturn with my eyes); spectacular, maybe even more so than the conjunction; WHOA!! Might try and catch it again tonight but last night was the best!

Well, well, well, a wandering dog has returned...after 4 hours out on the morning dog party circuit; his girlfriend is back in town...hopefully free of the TrumpVirus - Kansas strain..

Could not spot the waning crescent moon pre-sunrise today, must be way thin. Venus is also getting low in predawn sky as it catches Earth in solar orbit.

The IndoAussie Pacific boundary zone has some major subduction quake action going on today. While the seafloor quakes, 5 (at least) volcanoes are blasting away on Indonesia..with one on PNG. Kamchatka blasts on, Guatemala's active trio are still going big time and Hawai'i oozing continues. The southeastern Caribbean makes the list, Soufriere St. Vincent with a growing lava dome and getting gassy. Other reports hint at signs of trouble elsewhere on the edge of the Caribbean plate. Heat wants out!!

Sunshine here today, clouds coming later as a southern snow storm cranks up. Looks like it will mostly miss us to the south. With clear skies, I did spot Jupiter low in the southwest last night. Didn't have the binocs so never saw Saturn..or Mercury. Mercury, coming out from behind the sun will rise past Jupiter as the month goes on but never lingers for long, peaking on the 24th but gone, passing between Earth and the sun early in February. Uranus is near Mars in a couple of weeks, need to remember and check for the 7th planet later in the month (18-22).

Hmmmm, no dog, maybe the neighbors are home, hopefully without any Kansas virus, time to get my much cleaner(haircut, much needed, and beard trim - no more unabomber) looking self out, Today On Earth.

Another cold, cloudy morning, the sun slowly eating its way through the clouds and gloom. The barometer is trending toward High pressure but the big Low off the Maritimes is still slinging the cool damp air our way. And, the water table is so high, any sunshine has plenty of moisture to suck up, keeping humidity levels, and resultant morning fog pretty constant. Come on sun, it's trying.

No where to put the bodies, alive or dead in California..or Texas, PA, MI..even WVa has 'em dropping like flies. Likely no earthquake related deaths today; only a 6.3 quake on the seafloor north of New Zealand, no where else even at 5. Caribbean volcanoes?? We'll see what the USGS has to say about those tomorrow. Not much going on in space; clouds blocking any chance to see the Jupiter Saturn show wind down.. or have them joined by Mercury. Sun fairly quiet right now.

Time for me to wander with a big dog, make my weekly store run, stop and drop and calendar at LCHS and get my wild and crazy hair cut back, trim the beard tonight and I'll look a lot less like the Unabomber, Today on Earth!

What is my dog barking at? Just standing in the yard, barking away; the boy has gotten a lot more vocal with age. He has had his say, now just lounging, hoping like me, for the sun to actually burn off the cloudy mess outside.

The back side of the last storm system, a cool wedge, is still hanging on off New England; another day of cool and clouds and gloom, maybe a sprinkle thrown in; a little spitting yesterday early evening. Zonal flow across the US has the whole country cool but not really cold. A Friday and then Monday snow storm potential is building, both looking to miss VA to the south; southern snow storms, that will be bedlam and chaos.

A very quiet day for quakes, not so for volcanoes. 46 spewing mountains on the USGS list, if you look hard and they don't mention, yet, the two disturbances in the eastern Caribbean. Those volcanoes are notorious for just blowing up, no quakes, no gas, no warnings, just BOOM! All those quakes just to the north around Puerto Rico, for a couple of years now, got to be telling us something.. and all the Caribbean islands are volcanic (Bahama and maybe a few others coral/limestone). Earth ain't going no where, there will be eruptions.

In winter garden news, my indoor bell pepper plant is showing baby peppers. I did a little fingertip pollination and it's working. Indoor garlic is looking strong and happy, my 25+ year old poinsettia has new growth, looking strong!! Tirehouse greenhouse!!!
