Cool High Pressure Here, Croatia Shaky!!

A major quake, magnitude 6.4, rocked Croatia earlier today (afternoon there), one death reported so far and serious damage seems likely across much of the region. A 5.7 seafloor quake off the coast of Oregon created no tsunami but should be a reminder to the Pacific Northwest that they are long overdue for a big ole shaking...maybe 2021 will be the year of the earthquake...not a wish but a thought, been awhile...and there will be more earthquakes.

Just like there will be weather, cold and clear here as High pressure fills in behind a weak Cold front that passed through the Old Dominion earlier today. That dome is ahead of the winter storm currently blanketing the upper plains with snow; ice and rain as you go south. That will be our New Year's Eve and Day mess, seemingly just rain here. More forecast for Sunday, that one, still days out has models saying rain or snow or nothing..time will let us know and there will be weather.

Couple of sunspots but neither seems magnetically twisted enough to spew CME's earthward. Clouds blocked my view of the sinking planet show, only glimpses of the moon and Mars. Tonight, late, is the Full Moon for December, the Long Night moon and if clear skies prevail it will be bright out this evening. It was very bright in the tirehouse last night with the beaming moon, could have seen the deer eating birdseed in the front yard but she turned on the lights and made it very easy. Big Brown Dog got a good little 2am deer chase, go Breyer!!

In other Earth news; the ozone hole over Antarctica (remember the ozone hole...it's still around) is larger than in recent years, winds around the South pole are backwards from normal, winter conditions hanging on even though it is early summer there.

And in ongoing sad American news, slightly less than 200,000 new TrumpVirus cases yesterday and only 1,899 deaths..only. The post xmas lull before all those passengers from all those planes I saw in the sky Sunday get back home and keep the spread going.

In DeeCee, Congress agrees, Donny the douche vetos, congress overrides, Donny the douche, spending the last weeks ranting about fraud in an election where his ass was seriously kicked and now just cheating at golf, has suddenly decided to get involved in the 6 months late aid package for help from his viral denial and ineptitude and, of course, just screw things up, again and again and again.

In other good news related to bad news, the slime bag who shot and killed an innocent woman, in her own home, attempting to steal guns in Caroline Co. was found out, chased down and killed himself; that will save the tax payers some cash; still sad. And, while downtown Nashville was and is trashed the idiot bomber killed only himself, let's not waste too much time and money trying to figure out why...or ever show his ugly mug or mention his name again, we have no need to remember him.

January 2021 - On & Off Earth

The standard posting on a day I spend finishing the column. Where were you on Y2K? If you don't know, you're likely a kid..

January 2021 - On & Off Earth

Amidst the viral and other mania of 2020, it was only recently that another time of worldwide mania came to mind: Y2K. If you remember where you were 21 years ago, and it was at a party, children born after that day are becoming legal to buy adult beverages this year..and they have no concept of a time before the internet or cell phones and consider those of us at those Y2K parties, old.

I have two new cousins, baby boys born in this wildest of years; I wonder and worry about the world they will grow into. What will the legacy of 2020 be 21 years hence? Earth and time will tell, moving ever onward!!

At some point in January, toward the middle of the month, you’re going to realize it’s 6:00pm  and it’s still somewhat light outside; the planet tilting sunward again, days growing ever so slightly longer. Bundle up and get out for a stroll to enjoy the extra light and then linger into twilight, catching the bright stars of winter as they “turn on” and become visible.

While there is a little more sunlight every day, sunrises are still very late coming; the latest for the year is actually on the 4th (earliest sunset was back on December 7th, see me in person for the crazy explanation why those events don’t occur at the solstice).

Only Mars remains in the evening sky as the great planet show of 2020 winds down quickly into the new year. Jupiter and Saturn continue to sink lower and set earlier each night as Earth speeds away from the two Gas Giant, leaving them directly behind the sun and out of sight by month’s end. Venus continues to beam brightly as the Morning Star for early risers.

The first quarter moon slides below Mars on the 20th and 21st. Without leaves on the trees, the Full Wolf Moon on the 28th will seem much brighter than full moons in warmer seasons; winter full moonlight walks are a delight, any snow cover a bonus.

Earth reaches perihelion early on January 2nd, our closest to the sun for the entire year. Closer to the sun means we travel faster through space and why winter, although it may not feel like it, is the shortest season. Another reminder, it’s our tilt not our solar distance driving Earth’s seasonal changes.

Earth’s tilted axis also wobbles, shifting “traditional” zodiacal dates about a month from when established in ancient times. The sun is well into Sagittarius to kick off January, moving into Capricorn on the 20th.

This past Sunday I noticed something seldom seen this year, the sky crisscrossed with contrails. Condensation trails, high in the atmosphere, from jet exhaust carrying people home from Christmas gatherings. In a more normal year, a normal sight, but this year, likely continuing the spread of a virus we should have, could have, but still have not controlled.

Yet, amazing scientific advances have produced Covid19 vaccines in record time. Let’s roll up our sleeves America and get vaccinated, while still keeping our distances and our faces covered, and get this killer under control, moving our country and world toward safer and more normal days in 2021.

Chilly Sunshine Rolls On..

Another 21 degree start here at the tirehouse but we're already near yesterday's high, the monster high pressure dome slowly sliding east, but it's still cold!! A storm coming ashore on the west coast will bring more stormy snow and rain to the entire country as it moves east, ringing in the new year with one last round of wildness along the eastern seaboard to finish 2020.

Earth's lack of concern for we humans and our arbitrary dates and celebrations is likely not to end the tumult with the new year, the over load of CO2 in Earth's atmosphere to drive extreme events for years and decades to come. Hang on!!

A magnitude 5.5 quake has likely shaken nerves and structures in Turkey today. PNG and boundary zones to the east are a little shaky today as are the Andes along the Chilean Peruvian border. Cali is a little shaky, earthquake and TrumpVirus wise as well, no room in ICU's in that state. PR, the usual shakes along and off SW coast.

Caught Jupiter and Saturn at dusk in binocs last night, still spectacular, Jupiter now ahead and pulling away from Saturn and in current location (with eye aid) can really seen 3D nature of space; Saturn is way back behind Jupiter, just a gorgeous sight!! The Moon, nearing Full, is lighting up the early evening, adding time to late day walks, moon shadows in the forest a little disconcerting at first. Get out, bundle up and wander, loveliness abounds.

In other random thoughts, Nashville bombing😲. An avalanche in New York?? UK storms and flooding!! Douche Bag Prez, still no help, plan or interest in doing his job; his virus raging on nationwide!!

A sunspot is growing, roiling, spewing, just doing that sun thing...one forecaster calling this cycle a potential wild one...would figure!!

A Frigid Boxing Day

Deep cold has settled deep into the US, into the teens in Va for the first time in a couple of years (there's a world warming sign..); and it's still below freezing even with full sun. Low 50's as high as seen anywhere in continental US even deep into Cali, TX & Florida. Gradual warming is coming over the next few days with another big ole storm rolling across the country; east coast arrival: New Year's Eve and Day!! Happy New Year!!

Minor subduction continues around the Pacific rim/ring but not big energy releases to create any big issues. Likely 40+ volcanoes carry on, rumbling, outgassing, oozing; the usual scene, locals well aware of the dangers and rewards of an active Earth vent in the neighborhood.

Clouds had rolled through last night, again blocking the waning Saturn Jupiter show. Moon is waxing gibbous, sliding away from Mars. Venus still beams as the morning star, seen this morning on a frigid early dog walk. Orion and the circling dazzling stars of winter rise earlier and earlier each night, chilly but worth a peek.

TrumpVirus (reported) numbers are way down, though still sadly, tragically high, for xmas day; likely a new peak coming after gatherings well or poorly held yesterday. Congress's attempt at help and to keep the government funded and running(only 6 months late) has been stymied by donny the dumbass, deciding to get involved but only to get his name on a bigger check; shutting down the government obviously not an issue for the moron that claims how poorly it is run. Too bad he didn't realize that as head of said government (or elected to be head) it was his job to change that if it was so bad. Sadly, all he did was make it way worse by planting clueless stooges in positions of "power". Years of recovery needed.

A terrorist bomb blast in downtown Nashville tore up a block of that city; claims or reasons still open ended as that investigation gets underway. Hopefully, not a sign of militia activity, encourage by donny the douche, yet to come pre or post inauguration!

It's raining here, still mild, the southern air ahead of a powerful Cold front xmas punch. Puerto Rico is back to serious shakes at and above 4, few in the magnitude 5's on usual boundaries. 19 volcanoes on USGS list for the week, lots of familiar name, Popo, Etna, Reventador, Indonesia & Kamchatka lead the way and back oozing basaltic lava on the Big Island, Kilauea!!

Blizzard North, Rain South..

Cold, cold, cold out west, blizzard in the upper plains that's moving east but big rain coming for us in the southlands; then serious cold for all on xmas. Won't last long in VA but it seems winter in here!!

The planet dance continues, lovely again last night with Saturn still nearby Jupiter but both are sinking into the sunset (literally) fast as Earth pulls away. Moon was hanging with Mars last night, they'll be even closer tonight. The cirrus already blowing in ahead of the rain will likely block any sky views here tonight.

Couple of big quakes(5.7 & 5.8) well off Meso-America but no tsunami warnings. Otherwise, no quakes even into the 5 range.  Puerto Rico back to an even dozen quakes today.

Hawai'i eruption seems to be spouting on but not enough to make the news.

Back to over 3,000 deaths in USA from the TrumpVirus yesterday with a still steady 200,000 new cases per day; California seriously overwhelmed in both ICU's and morgues but Texas still leads in late season body count; xmas visits will likely lead to even higher numbers into new year - nice job America!

Winter, Feeling Like Fall

Skies stayed clear for the conjunction, still better in binocs or with eyeballs than most photos I was able to take..here's one..

A reminder, the two will still be close tonight but Saturn will continue to drop lower (both will as Earth pulls away from them)into the sunset. They will be joined by Mercury early in 2021 but all three will be very low, binocs likely needed to find them. Keep watching..'til you get the 3d nature or our solar system.

The wind is whipping out of the south today, lots of sun has temps on the rise, likely into 50's again even with some cumulus clouds around. Same on tap before tomorrow before another system and large (forecast) rain event on xmas eve. That front will sweep in rather cold air making for a chilly, dine inside, xmas.

Half a dozen quakes in the mag. 5 range today, most low, most seafloor/fish quakes. Fewer quakes show up on Hawai'i and USGS is worthless for eruptions happening NOW.

Little solar wind will zap Earth today perhaps stirring auroras in the northlands (it's light 24/7 in Antarctica so no night lights there).

Solstice Conjunction & Eruption!!

There had been a lot of quakes of late, today a 4.4, and after quite a respite, Hawai'i is back and blasting away. The water lake has been boiled away and replaced by lava and the world's most active volcano is active again.

Now, there are actually 46 volcanoes being volcanoes around the planet (the weekly list highlights the most rambunctious) right now but the king of all the big spewing mountains is atop a hot spot in the middle of the Pacific with a chain of islands, islets, atolls and seamount stretching all the way up and into the Aleutian Trench; 80+ million years worth of eruptions. All knew the lull was just that, a lull, a minor pause after 40+ years of continuous lava oozing. Welcome back Kilauea!!

Japan's northern end, offshore, was rocked today with a 6.3 quake, no tsunami report. Otherwise, a very quiet quake day...well, except Hawai'i and they will, it seems, continue shaky and eruptive!!

The Northern Hemisphere reached its farthest tilt point away from our nearby star today at 5:02am: The Winter Solstice(Summer down under!); been nice to see that southernmost sunrise spot..but, the gloom of clouds was still thick..at last the sun is trying to break through, not quite yet..

And, those clouds have shut out the best sky show in 800 years for two nights here in the land of eternal haze. Hope for clearing tonight cuz it's the holiday conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter that hasn't been seen for almost 800 years (and maybe, if you throw in Venus, 2020ish years). Wooooo, sunshine is making typing bright!!

If that sun does win out today, temps are likely to climb into the 50's, can I get another Wooooooo!! Niceness is forecast until xmas eve rain and then xmas day frigidity rolls in!! Enjoy while you can, December has been December like; previous months all masquerading as the previous month.

In the day's gloomy news, the US will hit 18 million TrumpVirus cases today and perhaps reach a death total of 320,000. Congress is slowly getting off their worthless asses and passing another aid package(only 6 months late) to help the millions struggling under the weight of inept leadership in dealing with this scourge; the scourge will be leaving in 30 days..so have hope.

Cold & Yucky; No Sky View!!

The map says High pressure, the sky says rain, not heavy yet but it's cold and damp and nasty outside. There were hints of the waxing crescent moon last night but no visibility of the once in a life time planet show. We'll see if this mess is gone to get a peek tonight..

Who won't be peeking.. another 3,000 plus Americans that died yesterday..and the day before and the day before that. Or unlikely, the millions lined up to get food or the health care workers working long hours and days. Over a million new cases in the last 5 days..throw in months of Russian hacking of US government systems and agencies and businesses (and of course, denial by Putin's stooge donny, still doing nothing in his last 31 days, not surprising after 4 years as pretend president). I predicted 4 years ago donny would do more damage to our country in 4 years than W. did in 8 years...got that way more right than even I thought.

In good Earth news, there are no major volcanic eruptions and have been no catastrophic earthquakes/tsunamis. Alas, weather events continue to cause local (and global) issues.. south Pacific islands recently trashed by monster cyclone, parts of northeast still buried under snow, Europe with some major cold issues; extremes all related to our rapidly warming and melting planet. Sunspots are minimal and no space objects with Earth in their target zone:)

Hazy Holiday Saturday

A chilly start, a hazy day, (weak sunshine)ahead of another system. Pretty normal quake scene, Hawai'i, Puerto Rico, Ring O Fire, nothing more than a few low mag. 5's.

Sky show still spectacular, Saturn & Jupiter getting so close, moon waxes on. I was too late to get good planet shots but got this moon pic; nice Earthshine and jagged terminator line!!

A Light Dusting..

A weak Low brought clouds and a very light snow dusting last night..and, obviously made sky viewing an impossibility. If it's really cool, rare, amazing, once in a lifetime, in Virginia, there will be clouds; seems to be Earth's rule. Forecast is not looking good for the solstice conjunction.

Lovely Ice Storm Aftermath..A Mess..

The trees here remain ice coated, struggling to remain upright, as the sun does its melting job; drip, drip, drip, crash!! On our late afternoon, the heavy rain gone, walk yesterday, there were cedar trees doubled over and dead branch debris everywhere, many stuck in the unfrozen paths; a tree/branch crashed across the field, wild!! But, I saw no snow. Almost 1 1/2" in gauge!! Almost 5" for month and now over 62" for 2020, still a foot behind record craziness of 2018.

Meteorologist Eric Pritchett with the explanation; a layer of warm air remained wedged above us and melted the falling snow leaving only rain drops to freeze into sleet or fall all the way down as rain, coating any surface below 32, most; a classic ice storm, something we haven't seen in a few years! Power was out, back and out again for several hours, a quiet evening by the fire with a dog still loving his new bed. Naps just kept coming:)

So, we missed the Saturn Jupiter Moon viewing last night...moon will still be nearby tonight, the planets closer still - 5 days til the solstice closest encounter, keep watching, keep shooting pics!!

Volcanoes..the usual suspects are still blasting away: Etna in Sicily, Fuego, Santa Maria, Pacaya in Guatemala and Sabancaya still wild in Peru. Lewotolo and Merapi still blasting big in Indonesia with Dukono and Semeru quite alive, warnings, STAY AWAY, for all. Kamchatka and Japan with usual 4 and 3 on list. Telica in Nicaragua is back on the list, 19 in all for the week. Still quakes on Hawai'i but not eruptions.

TrumpVirus numbers continue to rise and sadden; 3,607 deaths yesterday, blowing up the old daily record. It is my hope that all attended a T...p rally this fall, unfortunately that is probably not the case; more likely that they got it from a selfish, clueless TDS* - fat and stupid as their fuhrer wanna be. 244,000 new cases yesterday, now over 308K killed because we have been leaderless for 4 years, 17 million Americans have been infected (likely way more), still the proud world leader!! Who knows what crap fat donny will try and pull over his last 34 days.

In what you deserve news, swollen tick Mikey Pompeo invited 900 people to a xmas party..and only a couple of dozen attended, he barely waddled in and didn't speak..who really wanted to hear more lies..they are all busy looking for jobs at the fox or republican think tanks, an oxymoron if ever there was one. A Nasty Cold Rain..

Well...no snow here, even with temp at 31 degrees. Just a nasty, cold rain with icicles dripping off chairs and tables in the yard..nasty, damp cold. Not sure where the snow line is, but it ain't far off to the west. As the center of this Low slides off the coast and regroups it is going (already is?) to become a big snowy mess for the northeast; this Nor'easter, their biggest snow storm in years - Earth is warming, dramatically!! Maybe that will keep TDS* morons inside, their unmasked fat faces unseen, maybe their grannies will live a bit longer.

Outside, the birds are working the feeders hard; dog just peeked out but decided to get back on his new bed; he hasn't gotten off the bed since I laid it down except to pee or eat - a happy dog!!

If the skies are clear tonight, the Saturn & Jupiter show are joined by the thin, waxing crescent moon. The gap 'tween planets continues to shrink, moon will be a unique photo opportunity tonight, have to hope this mess is out of here. Moon will be 12 degrees farther left (east) of the planets tomorrow night. Mars, although much dimmer than its October peak is still bright and rusty red overhead in the south at dusk. Venus still dazzles as the Morning Star, for early risers.

A magnitude 6.1 quake and 5.1 aftershock shimmied the southern Philippines today; no tsunami report. Not sure if the shake was enough to concern the government there, even more corrupt than our's. Puerto Rico, also not known for honesty among elected official, was once again surrounded by smallish quakes today; about 1/3 of all quakes on today's short list.

Otherwise, usual almost 3,000 more Americans dead from the, so not a hoax, TrumpVirus, another day with over 200,000 new cases; nice job America!!

Finally found a walgreens with a working printer and competent employees, so not Louisa!! Xmas card are ready to mail, am I ready to venture out to P.O. Got to see my aunt and cousin yesterday!!! Woooo!! And, ran into a school friend's wife at staples last night, small world out there!!

A Lull Between Storms

An inch and a half of rain yesterday, some hazy sun today followed by winter storm Gail tomorrow, (Gale seems more appropriate:) which will bring more big rain + snow + sleet + freezing rain!! You may receive all of those, or any mix depending on you northness or southness or eastness or westness; hang on. I'm sure bread, milk and toilet paper is flying off shelfs.

Speaking of flying, Americans, to their grave; you've now killed over 300,000 donny with your TrumpVirus inaction, denials and lies, yet still you whine about election irregularities..as usual with your lies, you have no evidence to support anything! Blame The Rain!

Clouds and rain washed any early morning Geminid meteor viewing (although it was clear at midnight and I didn't go out..) and reports of clouds across the path of the moon's shadow may block any eclipse watching across Argentina and Chile'. It's a turbulent, cloudy planet with a 1,000 T'storms going on at any time so..really no surprise. Glad I got a peak at the closing of the Saturn Jupiter gap last night before clouds arrived. If you enlarge pic you can see hints of Jupiter's Galilean moons and Saturn doesn't seem quite round, those dang rings.

A magnitude 6.0 quake just rocked the northern Chilean Andes, far from the total eclipse zone but likely seeing a partial eclipse right now. New moon is 11:17 so they are just a minute away from totality (I'm typing this at 11:15). PNG, Tonga and Fiji all with above 5 shakes today; only fish bothered (no, they weren't).

The rain is slowing here, heaviest stuff seems to have just moved off to the northeast where it will be snowier. We look to be on the edge of major snow storm arriving Wednesday; storms have switched from hurricanes to blizzard, Earth roils on!!

At some sad point today, the 300,000th American will die from the TrumpVirus. Weekend reporting is always low but the pattern seems to be well over 2,000 dead per day, 200,000 new cases per day for a albeit nasty disease but one that could have been controlled and subdued back in the spring if we had a leader with a clue and citizens that believed science and doctors over morons on fox and facebook, alas, here we are.

Geminid Meteors, Lonely Solar Eclipse, TrumpVirus Death!

Tonight is the peak of the Geminid meteor shower and with the moon almost New, skies will be dark, hope for clear skies, watch 'em fly!! With this New moon lined up perfectly between the Sun and Earth, the moon's shadow will pass across the Earth in a path, with likely very few viewers, from the southern Pacific, across southern Chile' and Argentina, into the southern Atlantic..and gone. With the TrumpVirus still raging worldwide (nice leadership donny and USA) and travel restrictions in place, few will see the eclipse..but, there will be pictures.

The sun still shines in VA, temps rising to perhaps 70 today before the storm, now in the southern plains, arrives tomorrow, bringing rain here, snow to the west and north. Then the cold air, chilling much of the US, rolls back in here.

Just heard the statement, "no one knows what the prez's next plan will be"; the pretend prez has no plan, his only plan has been undo what Obama did, other than that he has no plans, none..they are all coming in a couple of weeks and none have arrived. Still republican sycophants, TrumpDickSuckers (TDS) keep their knee pads on and deny the results of an election where the lying traitor they've been sucking, lost big, big loss. Donny called it a landslide, since electoral numbers (306) will be the same he won with, in an election with Russian aid in the win, bipartisan agreement on the Russian interference. The Indo/Australian Pacific boundary zone is a bit shaky today, but all fish quakes and only in the low mag 5 range. Puerto Rico region continues to shake, Hawai'i with 4 today, few in Alaska, Cali, off Oregon but nothing out of the norm. Want to see a volcano..it doesn't matter, we can't travel and restriction apply where there are erupting mountains.

Warm With Clouds & TrumpVirus Death..

With the post-turkey day TrumpVirus surge killing about 3,000 Americans a day, ICU's and morgues at capacity, congress still does nothing to help and the loser, poser, moron prez rants on about the steal.. and "his" supreme court tells Texas and donny to take a hike. Ya lost, you're a loser, donny!!

Only really stolen election is the one that got him to the White House; Russian trolls convincing many dumbass Americans not to vote for Hillary - that's the stolen election. He's the Russian stooge, traitor but he's even been more incompetent than Moscow thought, blew that one Vlad!! Still the fat, racist idiot fox watchers believe! Lot of stupid out there, be aware!!

The TrumpVirus has now killed more Americans than died during 4+ years of WWII!! So sad!!

The southern air ahead of an approaching front is making for a mild but cloudy Saturday, a few drops maybe today but more rain coming Monday and weather guys all a'twitter about snow possibilities Wednesday. Snow today is well north of here but warm moist air is as far north as Canadian maritimes.

Nevada is shaky again today, elsewhere, the usual earthquake scene; only one off Japan at 5.4 so a pretty quiet shake day.

Saturn and Jupiter continue their show in the SW after sunset. Took some pics yesterday, some even show Jupiter's moons when looked at close. This is not one of those but my favorite with trees and contrail.

Got clear skies tomorrow night, get out, let your eyes adjust (20 minutes) and kick back in a lounge chair and just look up, your eyes will catch Geminid meteors has they cross the sky. This storm's meteors are often slower and longer lived than other shooting star shows. Moon is almost New, so no worries about our satellite washing out the meteors. Forecast are from 60 to upwards of 150 meteors per hour and they won't be constant, will be gaps then clusters. Forecast here is, of course, for clouds and rain:(

Auroras?? Meteors, TrumpVirus Record!!

With a stream of solar wind high speeding its way toward Earth (actually, may have begun the zapping) there is a chance to spot the Aurora Borealis in the northern-ish USA tonight. Not very often you see the Northern Lights into the US; keep checking this evening. Red, blue, green, orange (no not reflection off the soon to be leaving prez's makeup..), who knows what color the sky might turn.

Should be out at dark watching the planet show any way; Saturn & Jupiter draw closer and closer ahead of their solstice hookup! Sunday, of course rain is forecast here, is the peak for the Geminid meteor shower, now considered the best of the year; anytime after dark although later is better.

A 6.1 quake off Taiwan, handful of low 5+ quakes on another pretty normal day of shakes. Puerto Rico numbers creeping back up - 11 around the island commonwealth/territory. Oklahoma with some quakes, frack on oil sucking losers.

But, the real big, sad news today..a new one day TrumpVirus death record..WOOOOO! Over 3,000 Americans died yesterday as the post Thanksgiving surge begins to show; over a million new cases every 5 days. Nice job America!! Way to believe anything but reality. High pressure over VA is making for a nice sunny day, a little warmer. As the dome moves east, the return southern flow will warm things even more ahead of the next system arriving Sunday. Then back to December temps. Still a little shocked hurricane season just ended..actually, back to back storms in Nicaragua was a pretty nice little finale flourish.

Clipped By A Clipper

A little Alberta clipper system slid by, just to the north, bringing some snow showers above the Mason-Dixon line but just leaving us with a chill and clouds. The sun is trying to burn through the cloud cover, forecast calling for temps making the low 50's today; we shall see. Has gotten out of 30's and to 42 as of now, noonish.

Puerto Rico region quakes continue, but a quake in S.F. Dakota (if you've been there, you know what the F is for:) and one down east in Maine?? A 5.4 quake off Mexico likely frayed some nerves but did little damage. The only other quakes in the 5's where on sea floor causing no issues.

A CME (coronal mass ejection) is headed Earthward from our turbulent star tomorrow bringing a chance for auroras into the northern tier of the US. Saturn and Jupiter sneak closer and closer, keep an eye on that pair, truly once in a life time!!

The TrumpVirus rages on in the US, another 220,000 infections yesterday with almost 2,600 more deaths, 2,600 more American families devastated ahead of the holiday season. In good news, a sign of hope, the Pfizer vaccine was given to the first patients in the UK yesterday. The US is still waiting for approval and trying to get more vaccines ordered, the current clueless administration dropping the ball on ordering back in the summer, but piling on the excuses, lies and blames.

Cold Start But With Sunshine:)

The temp dropped deep into the 20's overnight but the sun is warming things (slowly) through a cloud free sky. The smallish sunspot did have a blast yesterday that will give Earth a minor zapping over the next couple of day; living near a star has pluses and minuses!

Living in the USA is kinda the same way; we're the first country to hit 15 million TrumpVirus cases!! Cali, TX and Fla. each with over a million cases, Texas leading the fall death count with over 23,000 dead texans!! Wooooo!! Another 1,500+ Americans dead yesterday with many states, full of TDS* idiots, formerly immune now killing 'em like flies, way to kill those cowboys, Wyoming!! Kansas, also takes a big leap up the death wagon!!

How can you be dying from a hoax?? And, there are people, their last words before going on a ventilator, denying they have the TrumpVirus..their last words. Probably thought walmart would save them money and make their life better; as PT Barnum said, there's a sucker born every minute and we have at least 70 million in this country.

But, 80 million people did have the sense to elect Joe Biden as our new president and Monday the electoral collage will certify that, contrary to the threats and lies and treason the current pretend, poser prez is spewing. Yesterday, I forgot to mention, was the earliest sunset of the year in the northern hemisphere; it's not at the solstice. Latest sunrise is two weeks after solstice. Never spotted the planet dance going on last night with clouds around..and it was cold and I didn't linger. Did see the now waning crescent moon high overhead at sunrise this morning, just past 3/4. Venus is still brilliant as the Morning Star!!

5 quakes today at 5.0 or 5.1, usual Alaska and Puerto Rico shakes, no big issues there or elsewhere.

We will remain stuck in a jet stream trough for a few more days but it will flatten a bit later in the week, our temps warming a bit everyday, 60's by weeks end. No snow events on our horizon but apparently Europe has big snow issues. Wild World Weather, welcome to tomorrow, it's here!!

Pearl Harbor Day Snow!

And, it's gone..while I was writing 3 checks, the snow, barely a dusting, melted..done, it's gone!! A little miss in timing made it a dusting and not a dump, such is the way on the warming world!! But, warm it ain't..anywhere in the US but signs are that will change. Here, it just got lighter outside, the tiny flakes are done, I may have to move my seat if the sun pops out(nope, clouds still rule), but I won't have to throw anymore wood in the stove until evening when December chills will return.

79 years ago today, a day that would "live in infamy", the Japs attacked Pearl Harbor in the then US territory of Hawai'i; it was official, we were getting into WWII. With the US help, Hitler, Mussolini and the Japs would be defeated over the next 4 very ugly, deadly years. The world map would get a major re-draw and the military-industrial complex would explode into the virus spreading, overpopulated, climate bending nightmare in which we now reside("Greatest generation" begat Baby Boomers and full on greed based extraction economy...maybe not that great).

Rational, competent folks are busy with vaccine prep and more, the Biden administration taking shape; solid, experienced people that will be ready to begin to repair 4 years of damage to our country and world the current septic system administration has dumped on us. I predicted donny would do big damage, underestimated just how bad it would be, underestimated just how Hitler-like evil he really was. Still time and work to do to dodge his attempted coup/destruction of democracy, worldwide, but without him attempting martial law or pushing a nuclear button, I think we'll make it.

A magnitude 6.1 quake in the Chilean Andes, and 5.4 shakes in the Philippines and Fiji (don't buy their water, filter your own, duh)are it for big Earth moves today; still the boundaries shift but no biggies!

The Saturn & Jupiter show continues, closer and closer they draw. The thin, waxing crescent will join the show middle of next week before the Solstice conjunction; without optical aid they will appear as one star!! Sunspots remain small and quiet.

Chilling Times Ahead!!

Want warm, S. Florida is your option in the USA today. Otherwise, it's cool coast to coast but storms are sneaking off the coasts; wear a jacket. More important: wear a mask, stay home!!

A good little plate boundary reminder shook N. California not long ago, but only magnitude 4.4. Japan and Tonga shook at 5.1 today but that was it for quakes today.

It took awhile, but I finally got a peek at Saturn and Jupiter through the clouds last night, Mars, not nearly as bright as it was but still brighter than any of the red stars around, Aldebaran and Betelgeuse now rising slowly in the east after dark. Venus still quite bright as the Morning Star was easy to spot this morning, actually, hard not to see pre-dawn. The sun still roils, the new sunspot cycle growing but not really noteworthy.

But, even though cool out, the sun is beaming and the tirehouse it toasty. About time for a walk, with a bird munching dog..hope you can get out on the planet but stay safe, be smart, mask on, stay apart!!

Deluges, Everywhere!!

Another 1.9" of rain in less than 12 hours, seems pretty standard in these days of extremes. Another 11,000 Americans dead; first 4 days of December, another day passes with still no resolution/help coming from lame ass congress as deadlines (perfect term this year) on keeping government open or help for millions facing evictions, job disappearance, starvation all due to lame ass job of response to, let's call it what is, the TrumpVirus! Fires still rage in California (along with TrumpVirus)!

A million new cases in USA already in December - A MILLION - that's a 1,000 1,000!! A heavy rain will not wash that pain and suffering away...

Stopped at my old school yesterday, to drop off some HolladayTunes20 CD's and they were having fire drills, woooo, so I got to visit without going inside. Great to see folks, brave folks for being there and dealing with current scene yet...got that creepy, you gotta be kidding thought from two that I chatted with. Sun and clearing seemed to be happening early today but wrap around from storm now raging as a nor-easter up New England way has brought clouds back in - seems to be cold nasty day in store - alas, it is December.

Just heard Grateful Dead guys on radio clamor about "snow storm" Monday...yea, that ain't gonna happen any more than donny's gonna admit he lost, or that he is a loser, or he doesn't have a clue. Might need a shovel to clean up the piles he leaves on his way out but won't need one for a snow event that is most unlikely to happen.

My question, why aren't these traitors, suggesting treasonous acts being arrested; at least, Rudy is under FBI investigation for his Russian contacts and treason efforts. When will our elected officials, all swore an oath to protect the country/constitution grow a backbone and say something...ohh...it might hurt their fund raising and re-election effort; support coming from the fat, white, racist TDS* morons believing the fox conspiracies, lapping it all up!! Reality continues on Earth; mild temps today ahead of more big rain coming our way again, Alaska is dealing with record rains and landslides (they haven't had much cold or snow up there in years - keep that oil flowing you idiots) and December has reminded us that global warming means extremes - that can be moments of cold, also..like now, in much of US.

At least no big quake issues, although I have to think a slow quake period means pressures are building with bigger shakes coming..it is Earth and plate tectonics has been the rule for billions of years, that will not be changing anytime soon. Nor will volcanoes in Indonesia be abating.

Off Earth, the growing evil empire of China has just soft landed on the moon, taken samples and lifted off. Will they pull off the mother ship rendezvous and make it back to Earth? Will they claim the moon? Impose martial law? Arrest all protestors? Build fake islands and begin fishing in lunar seas? Steal any technologies the moon has developed? Publish moon books and music ignoring copyright laws? Quickly overpopulate the moon? Send in slave labor to hand pick moon crops? Begin building a wall to keep out marauders?
