August On & Off Earth - 10th Anniversary

Same story here, just enough rain to get things wet, make the air even grosser but not enough to really do any good..

But, here's my August column

August 21 - On & Off Earth

August marks the tenth anniversary of an Earth event that changed our quiet Louisa world suddenly and dramatically. Everyone here remembers exactly where they were at 1:51pm on August 23, 2011 as a magnitude 5.8 earthquake, literally, rocked that world. The quake, felt by tens of millions of people up and down the entire eastern seaboard, is now known as the Mineral earthquake and while the aftershocks have, mostly, subsided, the memories have not.

In fact, over these last ten years I have yet to speak to anyone that was on the east coast that day that didn’t want to share their memory of the event; seems when the ground under your feet shakes violently, a lifelong memory is created.

Several factors combined to make our quake unusual and our Central Virginia Seismic Zone still an area of interest and study for geologists. Most big earthquakes, and 5.8 is big, occur at a boundary zone where two massive chunks (plates) of Earth’s thin, solid crust are separating, colliding or slipping past each other. We are not in a boundary zone today but we were 200+ million years ago and remnants of that history linger.

Also, unlike the shaky west coast, an active boundary with young broken rock that doesn’t transmit earthquake energy very far, the fairly continuous bands of stacked and tilted rock below Louisa stretch the length of the east coast and the rock is old, cold and dense. That allowed the earthquake waves to travel much farther and be felt by so many, from Canada to Georgia.

Ten years later, the Washington Monument has been repaired, Louisa has a new high and elementary school but traces of quake damage are still visible (certainly in my neighborhood) and much research continues; how often do quakes this big occur, decades or centuries apart? How prepared is the East coast for the next big shake? As I mentioned in my very first column after a little aftershock, the question remains, when will the next quake occur?  No one knows but we likely will all remember that one, too.

August sees the much faster Earth, catch back up with both Saturn and Jupiter, leaving the gas giant planets in the evening sky all night long. They will form a line with the Full Sturgeon Moon on the 22nd (Jupiter the brightest and closest to the moon). This full moon fits the original definition of a Blue Moon, the third of four full moons in one season. Back in 1946, a writer in Sky & Telescope magazine erroneously called the second full moon of a month a Blue moon and that easier to understand and remember definition stuck.

Venus remains low but brilliant as the Evening star in the west after sunset. A thin crescent moon sits near the planet in the sky on the 10th. The next night is the very reliable Perseid Meteor Shower; bug spray and a lounge chair all you need to watch for “shooting stars”. Our nearby, actual, star appears to move from Cancer into Leo on the 12th.

One of my goals for this column is to get readers outside to enjoy our world; August makes that tough. You realize quickly stepping into the dank August air, Earth is in charge and you are part of the food web and on the menu, a host of critters quick to buzz near a wandering human looking for dinner. I hope you still get out daily but do recommend bug spray, a broad brimmed hat and keep moving, Today On Earth..

Next month, an even bigger 20th anniversary, that we all, sadly, will also remember forever.

Kinda like mid-November, this week in July is chock full of birthdays of friends and family AND 5 years ago today(at a birthday party)I met a large brown dog, left to fend for himself by his idiot owners, that now, mostly lives at the tire house (he's celebrating at the neighbors right now)!! A big WOOOOO! to all!

And, a lovely day it is, still coolish and low humidity curtesy of a big Canadian High that will begin the move off shore tomorrow, the return flow send the heat & humidity back out way.

A Low twisting up off the GA/SC coast may become a storm, maybe not. Western Pacific is the place with typhoon issues right now, Atlantic basin remains quiet.

Also quiet, Earth; only two quakes above 5 today and not much shaking anywhere.

Not so quiet, the Sun; lot of spots but fortunately none too explosive at the moment. Moon is back behind Earth today, it's the Full Buck moon, lined up directly at 10:37pm.

With the cold(cool) front barely passed thru, we are sitting just in the cooler drier air but it is far from clear; smoke. Smoke from all the fires in the western US & Canada has drifted our way and it is a very hazy day..but will not get into the 90's so a break from the latest heat wave. Not the case along the northern border as they bake in another massive heat dome.

Europe still digging out from truly catastrophic flooding that will change many towns forever; build on a flood plain, guess what? Eventually, it's going to flood and if you burn coal for centuries and trap massive amounts of heat, that eventually is now. They've seen the glacier's rapid retreat..still we talk and promise but really do little to change. Still Earth don't care but it will react to try and balance out the additional heat; hurricanes and storms are how!!

Fairly quiet quake day, local issues only, mostly usual spots.

Sunspots on our side are still small(relatively-still bigger than Earth) but bigger spots and trouble(?) about to rotate our way - sun rotates once about every 30ish days. Didn't realize moon's orbit is on an 18 wobble cycle, more elliptical coming over next few years which means wilder tidal cycles, just to add a little more fun for coastal regions with coming sea level rises.

Few reports on site of TrumpVirus deaths but media & ICU reports showing a surge as dumbasses party like it was 1999 and won't get the vaccine; Delta will change their world. The young & dumb may not die but with LongTrumpVirus will suffer for...well, we really don't know. "But, my mommy said I could be anything I wanted to be", well, your mommy is getting her info from falsebook and you can't be anything you want, most of the recent generations can't even do arithmetic, "2 for $5, where's my phone".

Oh yea, verizon sucks, rapp elec coop sucks...claim they are great...it's another corporate lie. Here, the squirrels suck, where's a hawk when you need one. Time to move on, into the cool smoke, Today On Earth.

Stormy Rain, Front, Minor Cool Down...

Almost exactly when forecast(3pm), the squall line rumbled through, 1/2" of rain but the front wasn't here so we are not in the (relative) cool, yet. It is close and today we will likely not make 90. It is July, so the 90's will return by mid-week and with little chance for rain all week.

The rest of the country and world continue to deal with heat, storms, droughts and floods and out west, lots and lots of fires...the usual for the new, cooking planet. Northern tier of states back to 90+ heat; Glacier Nat. Park losing more ice, down to less that 15 active glaciers...need any more proof the planet is warming rapidly? It ain't forest mismanagement..dumbass..

Couple of good western hemisphere shakes today, 5.1 off N. California and 6.1 off Panama but offshore and no waves lapping up. Few quakes in the low 5's but no real quake issues today.

Tough day in my yard for a trio of birds; pile of feathers in the yard the remains of someone eaten and two siblings(?) bashed into my newly cleaned windows and did not make it. Both removed before becoming dog treats. There has been a hawk screaming and hanging about, be nice if he'd eat some squirrels.

Sun is spotty on our side but the real issue seems to be about 3 days from turning Earth's way. We'll soon see what they got left. Moon waxing on, Full Buck moon a week away. Venus beaming but behind clouds here last night.

It is cooking hot outside and with the high humidity that would be steam cooking or with any activity you will be basted, in sweat; it's muggy. Forecasts call for the Bermuda High to be shoved farther offshore by an approaching front increasing shower chances and bringing a slight cool down for the weekend. July heat returns next week.

Major rain/flood events all around the planet, here in US, China and Europe all kinds of stuff/people swept away after deluges and a tornado in Toronto. Just the constantly changing planet dealing with the extra heat our CO2 (and other gas emissions)laden atmosphere is trapping. Our atmosphere has always made the Earth a hospitable greenhouse but we are headed in the less hospitable direction, quickly!! Hang on!!

5 quakes at or above magnitude 5 today and no big issues there. Couple of dozen quakes in the 2's and 3's at Yellowstone require notice, we sure don't need that bad boy to go blasting; it will one day but when is the question and the resulting eruption will be very bad..waaaaaay worse than 4 years of donny the douche.

Speaking of the ongoing virus, Delta number continue to grow exponentially, meaning more cases and more deaths, all of dumbasses without vaccine. A band of fairly wild storms rolled through here yesterday dropping almost 1.4" of rain, rather quickly, and quenching our dry world. Some of that moisture has evaporated and added to an already humid scene but, it's July and I'll just say thanks ya big ole planet for the washing and continue to deal with what comes our way.

No big quakes, few small ones in place that likely needed a little reminder; Earth is still shifting..

It's hot, it's muggy, it's July..but a little breeze and not too bad, heat index only 92, temp 87..long as you got AC to come into, it's tolerable!! Chance of storms increases today as the Bermuda High slides a little east and begins to break down; better chances by week's end.

Fun (or not so fun) fact: Great Salt Lake is at is lowest level in recorded history!! Tapping into freshwater feeders by the ever growing mormon hoard the problem; they won't stop doing that (breeding or using the water) and prayer doesn't seem to be helping.

Half dozen lowish 5 quakes today, middle of China maybe some issues but what's a few dead chinese when ya got a billion and a half, Beijing don't care.

Blast from the sun is reported to be late, or not coming or missed us...solar activity really not a problem. Just read there is an 18 year lunar cycle of more or less circular orbit and for most of this coming decade it will be less circular..meaning..spring tides when at perigee (Super/King tides) will produce enhanced flooding along, especially, northern hemisphere coast. Mix in sea level rise from warming...surf will be up, baby!! Next Full moon in 11 days will be 3 days after perigee so only minor effect. Lunar crescent continues to grow!!

The Heat Is On!! JULY!!

Elsa is gone and with no storms in the Atlantic basin it's Bermuda High time; and that means heat & humidity and we got it. Back into the 90's today with the muggies, heat indexes over 100!! Big heat (and fires) out west, trough in between keeping upper plains a little cooler. Our storm chances increases as the week moves on but in summer fashion will be hit and miss. A good sign, The Hershey Dog Creek is still flowing!!

Also, in typical Va. fashion, if there's cool sky to view, clouds will not let it through. Moon, yes; Venus, yes; Mars, nope, couldn't see it and while on other days it might have been a lovely sunset sky, not last night. The two planets will be close again tonight but Mars is very dim and dropping quickly as we leave it behind. Venus will remain in pursuit of Earth, still months away from catching us and remain the Evening Star.

Few 5+ quakes around today, usual rim suspects, plus Iran (hopefully not an Israeli bombing) and northern New Mexico with some good little shimmies today. Sinkholes opened up in Florida's heart of denial and self-centeredness recently, the villages, land of TDS* on golf carts; sadly it hasn't yet swallowed the whole place...keep the faith!!

21 volcanoes on the list last week, some old favorites are back: Krakatoa and Stromboli while usual suspects keep blasting away. Western Pacific rim is, as usual, the week's winner for activity with Philippines Taal running off the most people with a nasty sulfur dioxide addition to its eruption; yummm to that smell.

Home Again, Home Again

After an amazing weekend of live music, Red Wing Roots Festival, I'm home and it feels like July, but not in the tirehouse:)

No major quakes happening, weather issues on a rapidly warming world continue and two neighbors of my sister's, dead, TrumpVirus, not vaccinated, duh!!

Elsa in Fla. Muggies Here

Hurricane/Tropical Storm Elsa is just about to make landfall into the Florida notch, pass near the capital (maybe a tree will take out de Santos) and thrash it's way up the east coast exiting near VA/NC border. Rain and wind..you know the scene. High pressure with SW flow muggies rules around Va way today, front heading in from west will push/interact/merge with Elsa..who really knows, likely tomorrow.

Few quakes around but only into low 5's on around Pacific/Aussie plate boundary so no real shockers anywhere.

Elsa Visits Cuba, Muggies Return Here

After a two day breather, breathing today requires moisture tolerance as the normal summer heat and humidity return to VA. Hottest day forecast to be tomorrow but 90's 'til Thursday when Elsa may pass to our east (or right over us, no one truly knows) and/or a cold front may bring some clouds and showers.

Today, Elsa is about to make landfall on Cuba, a country likely more prepared for hurricanes than the collection of refugees and retirees just to the north in the state of Denial (aka:Florida). Forecasts call for a good west coast raking by the storm; we'll all know by week's end what happened.

The rest of the half collapsed building was brought down not long ago creating an even bigger rubble pile that the storm will give a good soaking to, a major tragedy and a major mess but will the deniers heed the warning; rising seas, shoddy construction on sand bars is not a good mix.
