The remains of the bomb cyclone that trashed the west coast, snowed in the Rockies, spawned tornadoes across the Plains is gearing up for its eastern visit. More tornado warnings likely across the deep south today while the rest of us will just get wet, very wet. With the system cut off from the main jet stream flow it will meander, not getting off shore until Halloween, more trick than treat!! Cooler temps forecast as November kicks off.

Not much shaking in quakeville today. 20ish volcanoes on the list this week with La Palma still the beast, that eruption expanding, a new vent opening and spewing. Etna is blasting and the Aleutians are staying active. Krakatoa with a little 45 second burst, always bears watching.

November 2021 - On & Off Earth

As 2021 passes the 300 day mark, orbiting into the home stretch of another year, trick or treaters wander, All Hallows Eve parties resume (safely, I hope) and leaves continue to lose the chlorophyll, making the quick transition from green to a brilliant hue before joining the crowd and tumbling earthward on the slightest breeze; suddenly, it’s November.

November, named as month nine on the ten month Roman calendar, kicks off with an election on the 2nd but a bonus week before Falling Back to the shocking end of Daylight Saving Time early on the 7th. We take a day to remember the service of veterans on the 11th, consider getting up very early to see a lunar eclipse on the 19th and gather and give thanks with family and friends on the 25th. 

If your daily walk takes you past a little drainage, perhaps dry or very low after our dry October, keep an eye out and see if any water appears as the leaf-fall picks up, even without any rain. Many streams around here are actually groundwater streams and as trees, large players in the water cycle in warmer times, stop their water uptake as the light fades and temperatures drop, the ever present water in the ground, even without much rain, fills back into the many tiny voids in the world below our feet and shows itself as a fall and winter stream. My stream has reappeared without a drop of rain!

If the limited daylight has you out for a stroll at twilight or beyond, the just dark sky continues to dazzle. Venus remains the startlingly bright beacon in the west, Saturn and Jupiter, both still bright, easy to spot farther along the arc of the ecliptic in the south. A thin crescent moon visits Venus on the 7th, the first quarter moon forms a triangle with Jupiter and Saturn on the 11th. Mars and Mercury are both sneaking into the pre-dawn sky, very low in the southeast.

Need help finding things in the night (or daytime) sky? I use a free app, Sky View Lite; just point your phone at the sky, it’ll tell you what you are seeing. Want a challenge? Try and find Venus while the sun is still up. You need a clear blue sky, something to block the sun completely (a tree trunk or wall) and pretty good eyes. After about 3pm, I use the app to get close and there it is, just a little white dot but it’s a planet, in the daytime; it’s that bright.

While we were not turned toward this past May’s lunar eclipse, we will be able to see this month’s Full Beaver Moon slide almost completely into Earth’s shadow in the wee hours on the 19th. The moon enters Earth’s shadow at 2:18am, is 97% covered just after 4am and slips clear of the shadow at 5:47am. Lunar eclipses vary from blood red, to copper to dark brown in color depending on volcanic dust in the air. Set your alarm and hope for clear skies.

Even though our tilted planet blocks another 50 minutes of daylight during November, the month’s cooler temperatures and ever changing leaf display make any outing a pleasure. An added bonus: little chance of encountering biting bugs, spider webs or snakes. On this world, in this country, even as problems persist, there is so much to be thankful for and November is the month to slow, to stop, to be truly, thankful.

The days of the week, named after the seven naked eye sky objects, while sometimes tricky to connect in English isn't today. Nor is tomorrow, Sunday. Moonday is obvious with an o added. The rest of the week is easier to get in Spanish: Tues/Martes-Mars; Wed/Miercoles-Mercury; Thur/Jueves-Jupiter & Fri/Viernes-Venus. Weeks for those seven, months for the moon's orbital period and years...well, do the math, our ancestors did!!

Venus, Saturn & Jupiter continue to have their day after sunset. Mars & Mercury are peeking out from behind the sun in the pre-dawn darkness. The moon wanes on, rising later and later nightly.

The sun, spins too and has just turned a rapidly growing sunspot into Earth's view; seems more are just around the corner (we have a spacecraft opposite Earth on the other side of the sun).

8 quakes just at or above mag. 5 today, no big issues my guess.

We are in clouds & cool here; sun popping out on occasion. The west coast is where the weather action is; a hurricane is about to slam the west coast of Mexico as is a big storm approaching the coast further north. The problem in the COW states needing the rain will now be flooding and landslides. The millions of burned acres no longer able to slow the runoff; it's going to be a mess, likely a very big mess.

Ohio decided to count their dead, apparently weekly -339, so the unvaxed and/or unhealthy killed by donnie's still raging virus is still around 2K/day. Nice job GOP! I'm sure the TexassHoles and Floriduuhs are working on legislation to allow dead whites to vote. Wave bibles, korans into the air

We're so good, so holy, we declare

Got pope tellin' lies of hope & love

Should be telling men; wear a glove

Yet, on we destroy, driven by greed

Shortsighted, still we overbreed

At our current destructive pace

Be none to write history of human race..

On the fossil record, a thin stain

With nothing caring to explain

Ever nearing an extinction junction

Ignoring growth & the exponential function

8 billion? 9 billion? 'fore the crash

When we become just mo' carbon trash

So, be slow to jump in & judge

Ponder first, your personal smudge

Not much shaking in lower 48

In last 2 states, movements great

Off AK @ 6.9 & off Hawai'i @ 6.2

Thinking tsunami, about to brew

But, no wave warnings were sent

Seems Earth just getting a little bent

On La Palma, still adding new land

800 new acres, not yet in demand

If on a volcanic isle, you want to be

Don't be surprised if ya gotta flee

And, if ya gonna run ultra-marathon

Bring some weather insight along

Seems whole race caught in the snow

In the mountains, how'd they not know

Here we're still in the cloudy gloom

Western Mexico, hurricane going boom

And, solar blast still heading our way

Arrival time, seems later today

Maybe auroras into northern USA

We know the rules, change underway

So, whatever you do this Colombus Day

Before you get into a judgy way

Are you working to find a solution

Or

Are you just adding to the pollution

We're all stuck on the planet together

Good times ahead, or more stormy weather

If we aren't willing to confess

That we are who made the mess

And, will we or Earth clean it up
