So Not Rounding The Curve This Halloween!!

With almost 100,000 new TrumpVirus cases YESTERDAY(98,859 with another 971 deaths),  we are so far from getting beyond this mess yet the douche bag begging for 4 more years claims all is good, vaccine is almost here as he hosts more super spreader events, preaching to the dumbasses in the choir. Hopes that he gets it again, and it takes his fat ass down!! Just like Joe Biden's going to do Tuesday. There are still millions of Americans with a clue, that know with 100% certainty that Punk'n Head is a liar, bent on becoming dictator and happy to destroy America (and the world) in the process. Most have already voted!!

Turkey's building codes, or lack there of, were on full display yesterday as buildings pancaked into rubble as the Earth shook to magnitude 7. Aftershocks today will not help. Couple of dozen deaths so far, lots of injuries, more of both likely coming. Who will their dictator-wanna-be president blame, in the trump mold, he's always looking to blame anyone but himself. My guess, allah in what ever imaginary form you see him (I like the cartoon look), will not step in to help!!

Elsewhere, it's a more normal shaky day about the planet, from Aussie/Pacific boundary to waaay north on Mid-Atlantic ridge, Aleutians, western S. America and Scotia plate, all shaking and shimmying pretty good.

Blue Full Moon tonight (saw a reminder it could be blue-ish with all the fire particles in the air in some places). It was spectacular last night with Mars not far off, will be again tonight if clouds allow. Forecast calls for more rain here tomorrow but a look at national map...I don't know where it's coming from. We could use a break after this week's 4 1/4 inches - 7" for the month almost 49" for the year - yes, that's way above averages.

Sunspot activity grows, new ones about to spin into view - Sun rotates about once a month. There is a near flyby of a small meteoroid soon, but there almost always is but nothing to worry about. Other space news includes the Hubble spotting of a large mostly metallic asteroid, greed heads immediately translated it into dollars, cuz why not trash the solar system, Earth vermin not happy to just trash this once lovely planet.

The sun is winning the battle with the clouds, leaves still around and blocking the solar gain my tirehouse needs - cool in here - likely a fire in the recently cleaned wood stove to remove the chill tonight!! I try and make it to November before firing up the stove but we're close. Real close!

EARTH- Still Kicking Ass

The third rock from the sun is currently kicking some ass, putting some hurt on its most vulnerable, yet most pompous inhabitants. Big ole Normal fault slip down(mag. 7) just off Turkey has killed 4 (so far) and injured lots more while knocking down lots of poorly built structures in a country built on corruption and drifting toward islamic dictatorship - what! allah didn't protect you?? Dumbasses!!

The Philippines is bracing for a Super Typhoon - cat 5+ - as I type and the US is still reeling from the one/two punches of Hurricane Zeta and then winter storm Billy. 3 2/3" of rain here from that combo with thunder setting the stage for the Billy's deluge just past midnight. The big wind ripped through SE Va. but we didn't get much of that. Power is still out for millions adding to the voter repression issues - TDS* know if everyone votes, republicans lose and then there goes their minority rule.

Eta will be next on the list and seems already brewing in the Caribbean. Fiji has also got the serious shakes today, the Mid-Atlantic ridge shifted at 5.9, Alaska's still aftershocking, South and Mezo-America as well. There is even a quake in Romania and minor ones in Hawai'i.

The TrumpVirus positive count has hit a new, one day high of 90,728 new cases with another 1,004 Americans dead, dead Donny, dead! We are so not rounding the corner, you lying moron. 229,000 total deaths, yea, you made America great again. Great place to die, and those that want can't even leave, no other country will let us in, how's that for irony, Donny. Like he'd know irony if it bit him on his fat ass. Thought you were so bad not letting folks in from Mexico, now, Mexico won't let Americans in!!! Touché!!

The sun is trying to break through but clouds still rule on a cool, more Fall-like day - 50 as opposed to the near or over 70 of late. The sun did peak under the clouds and light up the yellow of the hickory leaves as it rose this morning, a brilliant display. Not much wind today so leaves are hanging tight for now. A large brown dog snores away nearby...the rascal!!

The sunspots are gradually turning away from Earth, the new cycle stirring but not ramped up yet. Hope for clear skies as the moon nears Full for the second time this month - one of 5 Full Halloween moons this century. Mars, Saturn and Jupiter (left-right across sky) will add to the glory of what should be a clear evening here for All Hallows Eve, jacket and hat recommended.

Zeta's Wind & Rain

 Looks like Louisiana is trashed again as Zeta zips through the southlands, big rain and growing wind in charge here. The good news, the storm will not last long anywhere, moving at over 45mph; bad news, it was a powerhouse deep into the continent. Winter is right behind the tropical air as winter storm #2 (Billy) will sweep it all out to sea by tomorrow, leaving a dry but chilly Halloween in the wake. The big dog has, so far, chosen to hold it, I can hear him snoring; he's a smart dog!!

The week's volcano list is a bit longer, big blasts on the Kamchatka peninsula from 5 different mountains causing air travel (the little there is) to avoid the area. Etna and Stromboli are (still?) at it on their respective Italian isles, eponymous activity underway on both. Sinabung in Indonesia appears to have stirred again. Japan has only one on the list, a little unusual. Iceland's Reykjanes continues to slowly increase in heat release and quakes. Villarrica in Chile' is it for the western hemisphere (hard to believe Popo and Fuego have just shut down). The Philippines and Hawai'i remain quiet.

Quakes, other than a 5.8 in Chile' remain low in number and intensity. Alaska and Puerto Rico with what has become pretty standard levels and in the contiguous US the fracking zones still remind locals that oil money is more important than the destruction of local property.

I assume the sky show, building to Saturday's Full Moon has been lovely but we have not seen the day or night sky since Saturday so writing about it has slipped my mind. Sunspot activity continues to stir, perhaps a glancing solar wind blow of Earth on Sunday to keep the auroras rolling..and potentially do a minor radio/satellite zapping!!

Mr. Executive Order sloppily signs on, recently (illegally??) demanding allegiance from all federal employee or they can be fired without cause. A 40 year civil servant resigned/retired over that one and made us all aware of our own little dictators effort to continue to consolidate his power - the spineless, little punkass bitch.

In a recent press release outlining all his accomplishment, there it was, actually stated, the end of the TrumpVirus pandemic in the US. He just declared it's over!! This as yesterday hit an all time high for new cases at over 81,000 with another 1,016 Americans no longer with us. But, hey if the prez says it's over.. but, then he lies about everything. But...they said it's over on the fox... Watch on dumbasses!!

His super-spreader campaign events continue as he preaches to the choir, kill on Donny. If he actually showed up in places he needs to swing, he would be received by protesters, boos and chants of "lock him up"; which most hope will happen sometime in late January!!

Not Long To Wait-a, Here Comes Zeta

American cops are maintaining their average; at least one black person a week has been killed by a cop this year. Not the average we are going for, though. Monday's bullet barrage of an obviously, disturbed guy with a knife certainly falls deep, deep, deep into the over doing it category. If you can't taser a guy with a knife, while keeping yourself safe, you shouldn't be a cop.

Sure, questions to answer, if troubled why is he off his meds, why does he have a knife, who should have been keeping a handle on him...but, the hale of bullets was such overkill, and they did..kill him, and those cops should be locked up!! Yea, it's a tough job, underpaid and under appreciated, but you can't just gun down people with knife in a bullet storm.

Speaking of storms, Zeta and Billy rage on. Billy trashing the southern plains with ice and snow and cold and Zeta, after a cruise through Cozumel, is headed to New Orleans and with a rapid forward pace, will bring big wind, far inland..and rain and flooding and surely tornadoes!! We await its arrival tomorrow, time to hunker down even further.

Once finally up today, I spotted something I haven't seen much of this summer season (yea, it's late October..), a black snake. 4'ish, minding his own business, although I'm sure on the hunt for something bird-like. Breyer gave him a distant sniff, listened to me when asked to leave it alone, we came in, I poured a cup of coffee and looked, snake was long gone. Breyer did a brief sniff about but didn't really seem to care (Hershey went somewhat ballistic when she spotted a black snake). I am good with black snakes, they eat mice and don't like copperheads! Glad to see him.

That also tells you have warm it is today - well into the sixties already, likely 70's later, depending on the sun burning off the mostly continuous 4 days of fog and clouds. It just got brighter 🌞.

Can't make billions if you gotta pay claims, and come on, insurance isn't there to help people, just to enrich a few - the American way. State sponsored and supported GREED!!

A little more average earthquake day, Aussie/Pacific boundary island arcs, Aleutian island arc and west coast of South America, which is basically an island arc on a continent - ocean plate subduction but under a continent not another ocean plate. Still well into magnitude 5's but likely no major issues. Although, the 3.9 quake that just happened out in west Texas surely rattled things pretty good there. Keep on fracking, keep the oil flowing, the CO2 growing, come on, what's more important, a livable planet or oil exec staying filthy rich.

Out in space, the new solar cycle is heating up, a new, big sunspot just formed (only 8 times the size of Earth - the sun is really big -it's a star!!) and a CME from another region will graze Earth Sunday. What will zap the grid first, russian hackers or the solar wind?? Stay tuned, it's a wild solar system and we are close to the nearby star:)

Zeta & Billy; Minority Rule!!

Winter storm Billy and Hurricane Zeta are looking to hookup!! Big nasty cold and wet, tropical heat, what could go wrong? Well, if lawyers can get it to the supreme court, everything! The wacko, glassy eyed, cultist, straight from Gilead, was added to the Supreme court yesterday by the old, white, racist minority, turning America's clock back at least 100 years.

Sad times are likely to get worse quickly as they look to shut down voting, end health care for millions, and soon, I'm guessing, we'll have to kneel and pray after the Star Spangled Banner before athletic events. Glory Days are here. All the while admitting that they are going to do NOTHING - they haven't so far - about the still rampaging TRUMPVIRUS. 

Even with only 500+ deaths yesterday, there were 74,000+ new cases  (cases, cases, cases, cases, COVID, COVID, COVID, COVID as the douche bag president joked at a rally yesterday, blaming the press for daring to report on his virus) so more death spikes will be coming soon. Again, let's hope it takes out more White House staff and rally attendees.

Another 100,000 folks evacuated from still raging fires in SoCal yesterday, likely more doing the same in Colorado, even as temps there drop to near 0 this morning. Ice all day yesterday in OKC, sure that was lovely, and that winter storm and Hurricane Zeta (#27 for the year) are looking to combine after Zeta makes the eleventh landfall of the season, where else, LA,MS,AL Gulf coast!! Earth karma just working itself out. Want to give oil and gas an enema, that's where you'd stick the hose!!

Only 6 quakes register above 4 outside the US today, 6! That's crazy in itself!! A new sunspot is forming, growing and any blasts (CME's) from it could be headed straight at Earth - I'm sure dumbass Donny will blame the media for that - The waxing gibbous moon is closing in on Mars, closest Thursday, (ZetaBilly will block that view here) but watch and enjoy that show any clear night.

Throw in a Blue Full Moon on Halloween and the end of Daylight-Saving Time 2 hours into November and dark days are, truly, coming soon. I'm sure militia are locked and loaded, to aid in voter suppression and then overthrow the results when their pig Donny get the "you're fired" he so richly deserves. Praise the lord and pass the ammunition!! The obese, white minority is not giving up their rule easily!!

Sticking with the lazy tradition of posting my monthly CV column instead of a daily blog... here it is.

November - On & Off Earth

When I first hear the reminder to ‘fall back’, my thoughts spring to the extra hour of sleep, that was ‘lost’ back in March, that we get back on Halloween night, as November begins and Daylight-Saving Time ends. Come Sunday evening, as the sun sets just after five, and likely even worse Monday evening, that hour will be long forgotten as the sudden, early darkness of November becomes our new, daily reality.

Moving the hour of light back to the morning does at least end the shock of getting up in the pre-sunrise dark. That early light, often filtered through the fog of cool, late fall mornings, enhances the rich colors as we head into peak leaf season here in the Piedmont. Catch the views early, if your schedule has you home in the early evening darkness.

The next three months are the season of darkness in the Northern Hemisphere, as we actually get closest but tilt farthest from the sun. That literal darkness seems destined to be joined this year by the figurative darkness of the seemingly ever surging viral pandemic and elections that may or may not be decided in a timely fashion.

In any year but 2020, the combination of the season’s second winter storm, Billy, with the 27th tropical system, Zeta, might be big news but so many records have been exploded this year that a snow storm and hurricane meshing into one fits perfectly into our new normal world.

In the western US, they hope that early snow will help extinguish their wild fires. Along the Gulf coast, they hope that November 30th actually is the end of hurricane season. Earth’s ongoing warming ways will likely have the final say in how those hopes work out. I hope you can take advantage of our, so far, mild fall and get out to enjoy the every changing palette of this lovely season.

With October squeezing in two full moons, that rare “blue” moon on Halloween, November has to wait until month’s end for even one Full moon. That will be the Hunter’s Moon and will graze Earth’s shadow in the wee hours on the 30th. Better eclipses lie ahead in 2021.

The evening planet display continues into November with still bright Mars dimming slightly. In the southwest, Saturn and Jupiter still shine, drawing nearer ahead of their winter solstice very close encounter. Venus still dominates the pre-dawn sky but is joined by much dimmer Mercury for all of November.  

The sun moves into Libra on the 1st, out on the 22nd when it makes a quick visit into Scorpio. The reliable Leonid meteor shower peaks overnight on the 17th.

There is some light shining through the darkness of 2020, something to be thankful for, amidst the death and destruction this year. Americans are practicing democracy at a level long unseen. Early voting numbers are also exploding records nationwide as folks get out to make their voices heard; good news indeed.

Our experiment in democracy, if it is to continue, requires participation from us all. Even in this difficult year, we have much to be thankful for, let us not forget that in this month of Thanksgiving. Let’s work to stay united and to keep each other safe and healthy as we gather to celebrate and give thanks for all the good we share.

At least the weather still feels like September..and September felt more like August..am I seeing a trend..will November finally feel like October? There really wasn't a real winter here last year, not one day under freezing all day, not one all winter! Have friend texting to make ski plans, like I'd get on an airplane and go somewhere..and will there even be a ski season in Va, wasn't much last year. Ya need cold and Earth is warm!!

Disturbance in Caribbean being watched, monster fire still raging in Colorado, crossed the Continental Divide yesterday. And, the Divide is way up there, not many trees and this is with temps this morning in the teens out there - deep cold out west and fire, warm and humid here - something ain't right.

Couple of quakes in the south Pacific hit magnitude 6 today, some 5+ shakes along Mid-Atlantic ridge, Alaska still aftershocking, Puerto Rico back to normal - lot of little shakes. Hawai'i with a bunch of little shakes, still crazy no eruption going on there, the quiet will not last much longer...

Saturn, Jupiter and the Moon were just gorgeous as a little triangle last night, Summer Triangle still pointing their way. But, Mars, so bright, was almost more of a shock to the eye than the other setup. It was spectacular last night, and we weren't even have auroras. Lot's of red auroras, showing up - they think - because sun's solar wind output is low so other colors not around. And, only showing red in photos...

National Make A Dog's Day!!

The joy of living with a dog, it's hard to put into words but the word JOY mostly covers it. They are such a delight to have around and if you don't have one, today is the day; the day to go help a dog out, to take him out of a cage and give him (or her) a home. To Make Their Day!!!

I'm not really looking for another dog (I'm sure Breyer would love it)but since making this dog's day 4 years ago my life has been so much better. Acutely aware of my moods, he's there quickly if I'm upset and I return the favor, reading him pretty well. He has me so well trained (he is much less so...) his early release to his girlfriend's, the treat system that he plays so well, the constant need for belly rubs, tug of rope, all on his needs when he needs them.

Still hard to believe what assholes just took his collar off and drove away from this poor guy - assholes - would put big bucks on their being willing to get down on their knees and suck trump's stubby little dick but take care of their dog..just left him.

And, a lovely day it is, to make a dog's day, headed into the upper 70's here, again, while the upper mid-west freezes and digs out from substantial October snows. More cold coming their way, live in North Dakota that's what you get..and now TrumpVirus is kicking your non-mask wearing selves!! High pressure here is still holding that system off - will ease through Saturday in a much weakened state.

Hurricane Epsilon jumped to Cat 3 yesterday, feeding off the still toasty warm Atlantic, will just miss Bermuda. Still, the island will feel the wrath of tropical storm winds and big waves - my guess is Atlantic coast beaches are taking a pounding today.

Another low key quake day, few at 5+, mostly usual suspects - off Greece, China, PNG, Tonga. Puerto Rico only had 1 quake today - whoa!

Volcano list is fairly light for another week - 2 in the Aleutians are only on list to say there is no activity. Kamchatka's 4 leads this week, and most are spewing ash and lava as are Reventador and Sangay in Ecuador - I have to believe Popo and Fuego are still erupting but they are not on the list. No Etna, also hard to believe that wild thing is quiet.

In other eruptive events..62,000+ new infections with TrumpVirus and another 1,170 American families are now in mourning, killed by a virus that should have been dealt with in the late winter but is still being ignored and excused away by the lying idiot elected president by russian trolls - with his ill gotten gains stored in chinese banks all the while blaming everyone but himself - doing everything but his job, begging for four more years - to totally destroy America. So scary, that millions buy his bullshit -spewed by the fox lie channel. Scary. If you ain't scared, of the end of American democracy, you aren't paying attention.

Falling: Leaves And Fog And 929 More Americans

The fog was so thick this morning it looked like it had rained, everything is wet, soaked. The sun is trying to burn through but it was just repelled; clouds persist. The colors just keep getting wilder, green still rules but it is losing the palette battle. Very mild overnight, only 56 for a low - think that was at midnight?? 66 already and with sun help we may hit 80 today!! A warming world, although there was snow across the upper midwest yesterday, more today for the upper plains. A warming world, driving extremes!!

Lots of aftershocks in Alaska but mostly nothing too shaky, China and Chile got pretty good little pops (5.1 & 5.7), Oklahoma very recently shaken but just a 3.2 reminder that freakin' frackin is a bad thing.

Orionid meteors were flying around this morning (not that I could see..) and more close encounters with space rocks today, two inside the moon's orbit. Good thing it's big out there!! Crescent moon was lovely last night, approaching Jupiter and Saturn, Earthshine showing while we were out looking. Mars was too low to see well from my yard at dusk but its red beacon-like brightness kept bursting thru the trees. Even the summer triangle was visible through the high cloud haze, still pointing at Jupiter. Polaris..still sitting up there over the North Pole; true north (well, really close..).

Hurricane Epsilon (season's 10th hurricane)will give Bermuda another scare over the next couple of days but will likely not make a direct hit. Deep in the Caribbean, another system is being watched, plenty of hurricane season left in this record smashing year.

Lying Punk'n Head prez says we've rounded the corner on TrumpVirus, on another day of 60K+ new cases and another 929 Americans dead. If wishes were horses...we'd be even deeper in horse shit. Still long lines for testing, food banks, at the unemployment offices, bankruptcy sign up windows and to get into ICU's. The Fog Of Fall

The big temperature swings of Rocktober, warm days, cool nights, moisture around..ya get fog in the morning.  Cool air settles down close to the ground overnight, moisture's got no room in the chilly air, gotta go somewhere and it's back into the air as condensation; fog. The sun is slowly burning it away as we head into another lovely, warm, colorful day.

Epsilon not quite a hurricane yet, still forecast to become cat. 1. No land issues it still appears.

BIG QUAKE - ALASKA; yesterday afternoon - 7.5 magnitude. Tsunami warnings briefly issued but it turned out to be a Strike-Slip quake, with lateral movement and while that is a big shake, with dozens of strong and small aftershocks, no tsunami and other than sand shifting - it was at Sand Point - little damage was done. 5.6 quake near Reykjavik Iceland may be more problematic but that just happened so no reports yet. Otherwise, another fairly quiet quake day, well Puerto Rico and a few on Hawai'i.

There are more clouds around today that I was expecting, weekend forecasters perhaps a little iffy.. but the warmth forecast is slowly building - with Fall colors, another fine Rocktober day!! Waxing Crescent moon should be visible in the SW if your skies are clear this evening, drawing nearer to Jupiter & Saturn. Mars still wins the evening brightness contest.

Tropical Storm Epsilon is about to go to hurricane status out in the mid-Atlantic, no land threat seems imminent! Still..Epsilon! Whoa!

Puerto Rico and Hispaniola still having shaky times on the northern edge of the Caribbean plate. IndoAussie plate is showing the only quakes that reached mag. 5 today but low in the 5's and likely just the daily cost of living there. Volcanoes (rich soil) and quakes (deal with it, you're in the tropics with rich soil)are a way of life there. Too bad most of the overcrowded hundreds of millions of residents are head down on the rich soil praying for celestial help, uneducated on the simple explanations for their Earthly trials..allah ain't gonna help..

Sun still with a little spot action. Couple of near misses today - way closer than the moon - by small asteroids. Orionid (Halley's Comet dust debris) meteors are showing up more often, will peak early morning on the 21st.

TrumpVirus numbers seem a little down yesterday, just under 50,000 new cases and less than 400 deaths but that is not the recent trend. NE flow, and High pressure in control dropped temps into the (upper) 30's this morning. We should pop up into the 60's today with even warmer days coming this week, little chance for rain in that time. Couple of little stirrings in the tropics but nothing has come together.

The sun has a spot but is posing no threat to Earth from a blast. Mars still bright all night long with Jupiter and Saturn on pre-midnight view. Venus continues to beam as the Morning Star.

As usual, and why I picked the third Saturday in October, today is perfect party weather. After a cool start (43 here) it will warm (cool?) into the low 60's and be a perfect night for a fire, there will be a fire! The water in the tropics is still cooking warm and a couple of disturbances are showing signs of storm development, we aren't done with this season. Colorado joins the giant fire club as the west burns on, again, thanks for nothing Punk'n Head prez.

A Weekend Chill

The color show continues in the forest, emphasized even more by the cloudy, flat light today. Still 63 at midnight, we're now down in the mid-50's with little chance of increase as the massive Canadian blast spills deep into the US. So far, the very little rain here forecast is holding up, couple of spritzes and a few drops right now but not much has or seems likely to fall.

The sun is forecast to return tomorrow, with a lovely weekend in store(as is usually the case on my annual party weekend, alas...), but without any sun today there will be no daytime heating. After the cool weekend, temps will rebound for another above average week, the growing norm on a warming world. But, you have to go way down south - or to California, where federal lands burn on without any federal help - if it's warm you want this weekend.

Alaska and Puerto Rico, both, with a few smallish quakes today. 5.0 biggest quake on the planet today and that's along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

New Moon is today at 3:31pm with the closest perigee of the year just nine hours later. Add the sun's tug to the moon's at that distance and tidal range today will be extreme, coastal flooding, another new norm.

The only sunspot has quadrupled in size in a day but still isn't anywhere near the size range that might send solar blasts our way. The Ides Of October

The Ides of October, for what that's worth, is today, Woooo! Clouds have quickly hidden the sun and the cool start lingers, the promise to warm slow in coming. Rain totals for the Cold front's passage tomorrow have dropped from multiple inches to a couple of tenths; there will be weather. Big rain or not, there is a big chill with this air mass, pretty typical for this time of year; frost, we'll see.

Today is volcano report day: 17 on the list this week. Guatemala is back on the list with Fuego, Pacaya & Santa Maria. I'm sure they were rocking and blasting last week, as well, but were not on the list. Popo is back on the list, though again, likely blasting ash last week even when not listed. Chile & Nicaragua round out the eastern side of the ring. Kamchatka (3) and Japan(2), Indonesia(4) over to PNG(2) make up the active counties on the western ring - no real surprises there.

Another slow day of quakes; 3 shakes in the low 5's but no issues, the usual suspects.

Moon & Venus - Sweeeet!!

A very thin crescent moon and Venus were hanging out, well up in the SE just before sunrise, just spectacular together. After a chilly start, today shows signs of warming into the low seventies as the High directly over us begins to slide east - dry air cools & warms quickly so these Fall days have big temperature swings - chillier air ahead for the weekend after a Cold front rolls and rains thru Friday.

No quakes today even approaching magnitude 5 - very strange. No sunspots. Mars is still stunning in the evening, last night with the Milky Way opposite ripping through the Summer Triangle - clear skies, nice viewing.

TrumpVirus numbers have not been updated, but indications are it is still spreading and killing, so far this week on the site I've been using for months - maybe prez finally got them repressed. A Slow Clearing, Drying..Slow

The atmosphere is trying to clear but Delta dumped a lot of moisture and this air has gotta go before the deep blue view of space returns - map shows a occluded front might do that later today. Delta is bringing rain to a very dry New England; the west coast remains dry and much ablaze. The chilly reality of an approaching winter is settling in as a cold air mass in the Rockies, headed our way (in modified form) this weekend.

Other than some shaking in Peru and Bolivia on the eastern Ring and along Philippine plate on the western, quakes remain low in magnitude and number.

A Low way out in the Atlantic is likely the next storm, Epsilon, but that is still iffy and days away from actual formation.

A Wet Columbus Day

While Columbus Day is somewhat out of fashion, I don't really care; if not for Columbus, I/we would likely not be here. Delta Heads Inland - Hello Rain

Delta slammed into Louisiana yesterday, cat. 3, trashing the already trashed state anew - live by oil, below sea level, bad things will continue - welcome to your new normal. Light rain from the outer bands of this massive storm are already here in central Va. Gonna be a wet weekend with lots more rain to come.

Low earthquake numbers again; Alaska back on the subduction train with quite a few in the 4+ range, mag. 6.0 out in the south Pacific near Easter Island -divergent boundaries still with magma pushing through. But, mostly the quake quiet continues.

Mars Dazzles, Delta Explodes

Mars will only be 39 million miles from Earth tonight, it's closest approach until 2035. It's red, it's bright, it's brilliant; try a photo with a phone, I'll likely set up my camera on a tripod with some serious zooming. With the moon waning, rising later and later it won't wash things out - perfect Mars viewing. Check out Jupiter and Saturn early evening for comparison - Mars far outshines them tonight.

If you check Venus tomorrow morning, it is still brighter than Mars; almost twice as large and white clouds reflect more light than rust, the morning star still rules. An early riser with a good sky view can catch them both as Venus rises, Mars is close to setting. I will neither be up that early nor have I a view here in the forest.

Few good shakes on the planet today but no tsunamis and most in places where damage will be very local and likely minimal.

Delta went from a depression to a category 1 hurricane and as it moves into the hot waters of the Gulf of Mexico is expected to go to at least cat. 3; landfall right not near New Orleans as cat. 2. The High parked over us is sliding east today and our air flow will shift to SW, warmer day ahead after a cool start. That will be our weather for rest of week; until remains of Delta arrives or grazes us this weekend.
