A Wet Columbus Day

While Columbus Day is somewhat out of fashion, I don't really care; if not for Columbus, I/we would likely not be here. Oh, I get the death and destruction and genocide that happened after he and then lots of other Europeans got to the "New World" but it's not like that part of it has really changed. Sure slavery is officially done, yet, millions, likely far more than at the peak during colonial times, are still held as slaves. Genocides are still going on all about the planet, war and disease still reign... but, now there are at least ten times more humans creating the issues and today's issues far outweigh what went on then.
Today's threats are existential to humanity, climate change, the continued oppression of women and forced overbreeding by patriarchal religions and the continued loss of democracies and rise of surveillance based, weaponized autocracies worldwide will make what happened with Columbus look like child's play.
Want to see the former world leader lose a big chunk of democracy; what the sham senate confirmation hearing of a brain-washed (the most evil patriarchal religion at work)zombie today. If our lying, tweeting, presidential poser is able to stay in office through the supreme court, US democracy is done. Maybe it will come back after a prolonged civil war...but, it sure won't be the same. Throw in the rapid increase in climatic shifts and a future with a Punk'n Head king will not be pretty. I hope I'm not right but I sure was on both Bush and our current douche in chief. Columbus will be a minor blip on the atrocity meter.
Because...as I can see looking into the very wet forest, the Earth doesn't care. The planet is still dumping, what was warm water in the Gulf of Mexico just days ago as a much cooler version, rain, in the hopes of balancing out a serious heat imbalance. A front, driven by much cooler air, is headed our way for the late week but today we will just wait out the soggy remains of the mighty Delta to finally move off the east coast. Should be some clearing tomorrow.
The Earth is a bit shakier today, the Mediterranean off Greece, on and off shore of the west coast of Mezo-America and off the SE coast of Japan all have quakes over 5 but most will only ripple the sea floor or cause very local, minor damage. Still pressures build...
TrumpVirus numbers are down for yesterday but almost half the 400+ deaths are in Florida alone. There really are few signs it's slowing as we reach 215K for deaths and close in on 8 million cases. Quite the world leader!! Therapeutics are improving infection outcomes but dumbasses nation(and world)wide still refuse to do the simple thing to slow the spread - put a mask on your fat, ugly face. Most of the uncovered faces I see, should wear a mask, all the time.
Tomorrow morning, the waning crescent moon will be hanging with the Morning Star, Venus, in the east before sunrise. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are still out there after dark but I haven't seen them for days. The Orionid meteor shower is building (peaks the 20th) as we pass through the dust trail left by Halley's Comet 35 years ago - only 40 years before it returns!!
On a sad note, sorry about the ankle Dak, we'll miss ya(but that's why QB's can slide...) and on a happier note, congrats to Alex Smith on your return and for hanging in there, a long and tortuous road it has been. And, Rafa, YOU RULE THE CLAY!!
Time for a damp dog walk!! Stay safe, be smart, mask on, stay apart!! Whoa... a little wind and poplar leaves go flying!!
