Went out for a early Rocktober sky peak last night and it was SPECTACULAR! Mars is so red and so bright and nearby the almost Full Harvest Moon - clear and cool. Wow.
7:05 tonight is the line-up time for the Full moon: Sun, Earth, Moon in a row! Another front, with much less moisture than the deluge inducing one that just passed through, will be sliding our way tonight so there may be some clouds around - hope you have clear viewing.
Tonight the Harvest moon and Mars will be closer still but it's tomorrow night they will have a near miss (there will be an occultation in southern hemisphere).
With the warm southern air pushed ahead of any cold front, today will be a little warmer than yesterday - that was almost chilly- but the chill of Fall will settle in with this next air mass - lows into the 40's and maybe a few 30's.
Southern California had foreshocks, a 4.9 quake and now dozens and dozens of aftershocks (100+) earlier today, and ongoing. It was along the San Andreas and near the Mexican border so I doubt there was much damage and few really affected. The still raging fires elsewhere in the state are much more of a problem, and October is normally when fire season starts - perhaps a new president might offer some help - much of what's burning is federal land...
14 volcanoes on this weeks list; Grimsvotn in Iceland, active and causing big floods in 2004 & 2010, is back on the list and heating up. The rest of the list are mostly the usual suspects, PNG, Indonesia, Japan and Kamchatka on the western ring and Ecuador down to Chile(which leads the list with 4 this week) on the east. Hard to believe that all is calm in Meso-America but there is nothing on the list; Fuego? Popo? I bet they are still rumbling and spewing.
Stirring up off the Yucatan is likely tropical storm Gamma with another depression east of there with potential, methinks hurricane season is far from done!
