Just didn't have a poem in me today..
A magnitude 7.4 quake hammered southwest Mexico yesterday as the Cocos plate continued to be subducted - stuffed - under the North American plate. Lots of aftershocks will terrorize the region for days, making returning into damaged buildings a life or death decision... Reports of 6 deaths, dozens of injuries will likely rise as more reports slowly filter in, delayed by widespread power outages in the region.
One country to the north, another 766 people died from COVID-19 while our president bragged about his wall, so proud of the 3 new miles constructed in his 3 1/2 years. Crowing in Arizona, where another 42 people died yesterday, about testing less- to help the numbers, his amazing virus record, his ability to drink water from a glass...with only one hand and more whining about the steepness of a ramp. All the while, bedlam reigns, cops continue to spray tear gas yet protesters won't go away and another book by another republican traitor about the president's multiple acts of treason hits the stores. The great American slide continues, down the Egyptian river coursing our heartland, Da Nile!
Adding insult and more injury to the still raging pandemic, the largest dust storm/cloud every seen continues to swirl across the Atlantic. Caribbean islands are engulfed in the dust today with Texas in line next; the South and Mid-Atlantic will see the dusty haze by the weekend. A mask needed for a new reason; breath deep you freedom lovers, take an extra puff you Marlboro cowboys!
A weak Cold front slid through the Old Dominion yesterday but stalled just offshore. A few raindrops fell but the big news, a two day humidity reprieve, cooler drier air pushed the front here and will linger until Friday when the humidity returns, and the dust cloud arrives. Summertime!!
After sunset, the waxing crescent moon slides higher into the western sky. At the opposite, eastern, end of the ecliptic, Jupiter followed immediately by Saturn rise earlier each night, about an hour after we turn away from the sun. There is a comet rounding the sun right now and seems to be holding together. If it does remain intact, could be naked eye visible by mid-July. Comet forecasts..always shaky at best.
For those working, it's Hump Day, celebrate! For the millions still unemployed, I hope your benefits arrive and keep coming-get out, in mask and protest- and for retired folks like myself, who cares what day it is!!:) For those working in health care, stay safe. For those forced to work for greed-heads, in unsafe conditions (Amazon comes to mind, and meat packing plants..) keep up your battles to get the word out and stay safe and apart.
Today On Earth!
