On Gratitude..

Gratitude was an unspoken human quality

Working together’s how humans came to be

Without claws or fangs, can’t run at great speed

Working together was our basic human need    

But our numbers grew, became harder to share

About all, beyond family, became harder to care

But, remain connected, we needed to be

’Twas then a show of gratitude, we began to see

Too big for just sharing, trade was born. 

Villages & cities, many new hats were worn

Still we needed connection, shared empathy

And, a new idea, Thank You, was set free

Original word, lost deep in our history

But, have to believe, it came very early

Today, often..said without a second thought

For a door held or a coffee we bought

Some seem to forget, think there’s no need

Me thinks, their focus..may be more on greed

Too bad, cuz we’ve all needed a helping hand

Maybe a fewer ‘rights’ we should all demand

Self is our focus, without it we don’t survive

Yet, without shared concern, we don’t thrive

Say thanks to 8 billion fellow humans, we can’t do

But, an easy first step, say hi to those next to you

Let a glance, a smile, show your grateful attitude

We all feel it, how ‘bout we all share a little gratitude

Today On Earth
