September - On & Off Earth
September 2021 - On & Off Earth
As September kicks off(HS football is back!), we are still enjoying the long daylight of summer, 13 hours on the 1st, but will lose more than two minutes of light each day as our tilted orbit moves us steadily into Fall’s growing darkness. Fall begins at 3:21pm EDT on the 22nd, the Fall Equinox, the moment when our nearby star is directly over our planet’s equator.
Spring and summer’s long hours of direct sunlight have been heating the waters of the northern oceans for 5 months and they are hot! Earth has a simple mechanism to move that heat poleward, hurricanes. Hurricane Ida exploded into a Category 4 monster fueled by that heat in the bath-like waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Hurricane season peaks annually around the 10th and while Julian currently spins harmlessly well out in the Atlantic, soon to be named Kate and Larry are exploiting that excess ocean heat and fueling up now. Stay prepared and hurricane aware, we appear headed for another wild ride.
Less daylight means more darkness, couple that with, hopefully, cooler temperatures and September offers fine evening sky viewing. Venus remains the brilliant beacon in the west after sunset and is just below and left of a thin crescent moon on the 9th. As the sky gets darker, look for earthshine lighting the dark side of the moon; sunlight reflected off Earth to the moon and back to your eyes.
A thicker crescent moon is just above the red supergiant, Antares (Mars, red, rival star), the heart of Scorpio on the 12th. Moving farther along the ecliptic, the arcing plane of our solar system, the still waxing, now gibbous moon passes beneath Saturn on the 16th and brighter Jupiter the next night. The Full Harvest Moon is on the 20th. The sun moves along the ecliptic from Leo into Virgo on the 17th. Hope for, occasionally, clear skies!
This September, on the 11th, we mark the 20th anniversary of a very bad day in the USA, a sad day, really, for the entire world. Just like for “our” earthquake, my everlasting memory of 9/11 began in my classroom, when I first heard the still tentative news of planes flying into the twin towers. It was hours later until I saw the actual images of the terrorist attacks, still, also etched in my memory forever.
Since that tragic day, a new generation has been born, 1.5 billion more humans, with no memory, just stories of 9/11, who are, unfortunately, now creating their own memories of the events long ago, as the lingering aftermath of that terrible day remains headline news.
Even more tragic, with a readily available, safe and effective vaccine, more Americans will die from COVID-19 today than on this same day last year; more every three days than terrorists killed on September 11, 2001.
The rules on Earth remain the same; to deal with the daily, unending change every creature must adapt, migrate or risk death. Those who continue to ignore those simple rules do so at their own peril, but today, they increase the risks for the rest of us, too. Be smart, stay safe out there, Today On Earth

Another Hard Day On The Planet..

OUR WARMING WORLD..
OUR WARMER WORLD
A warming world, what more to say
It’s male power and greed, stands in the way
For 60+ years we’ve known the score
Climate change is knocking on the door
Yet, driven on by corporate greed
Religious fervor to overbreed
All while ignoring our most basic needs
Our livable Earth quickly recedes
Still men continue to blame and deny
Me thinks, it’s time to give women a try
Cuz our spinning Earth, our shining sun
About we humans, they care none
Both planet and our star, it is clear
In a million years, will both be here
Reality on Earth, nothing but change
A daily chaotic, constant, rearrange
Often slow, but suddenly, Ohh so fast
The future always a new twist on the past
But, men still playing the bad guy role
Long overdue, women back in control
Yet, still, very few will confess
That we have created all of this mess
First coal, then oil, gas, now plastic
So there’s waste, profit’s are fantastic
But, I, too, drove a car here today
Burning that gas all along the way
I try to reduce, reuse, do my part
Still as a whole, where do we start
Well, since they’ve no plan, I have no doubt
We need to vote the old white men out
You know the ones, they got no shame
Lies and denial, but quick to blame
You know the ones, they got no plan
Easy to spot, they’re republican
We try to pass laws so they won’t pollute
They pass laws to pile up the loot
What will they do, and this ain’t funny
When they find out, you can’t eat money
Tough times ahead, really already here
We men have blown it, that is quite clear
So..
Ladies, thanks for stepping up to the plate
We need change now, there’s no time to wait
UN’s Red Flag’s about 30 years too late
Sadly, we delay longer at humanities fate
But, women, I trust, you bringers of life
While men, war mongers, bringers of strife
So, if we humans want to keep living large
We desperately need to put women in charge
Seems pretty clear, what we need to do
Elect Blakely Lockhart, on November 2
We’ve a really lame delegate, John McGuire
For Dominion and big biz, his vote’s for hire
Just sings the same song
“Can hold my breath really long”
But, come November we really need to fire
Our lame, slacker delegate John McGuire
Come November, his term needs to expire
Against women and schools
But, more guns for fools
Need to lose this worthless reality denier
There once was a delegate, John McGuire
Power, seemed all he wished to acquire
As a republican
He had no real plan
Come November, his term needs to expire!
